OK. You folks who have the fsm, there is about a 1 inch ID hose coming from the bend in the intake right before the throttle body. Does this thing have any function? It seems to dead end into some plastic round box mounted on the rear of the radiator. If there is no function (or one that matters) i can remove it, right?

if you remove it you might notice some hesitation at throttle activation but that's it.

^^really? hmmm...I know I removed it, but what is it's specific use if it causes hesitation?

If it's what I am thinking it is you will reduce the amount of filtered air available when you nail the throttle. It takes a second to get the air flowing in at first when you jump on the gas suddenly and when I have removed these types of resorviors I noticed a slight lag when the throttle was nailed that wasn't there with it in place.

but it's a sealed box, how can air come out of it, I was under the impression that sound goes into that box, and is then made quieter, but that's me.

it's a box attached to your intake pipe to store filtered air. with it gone and the intake pipe resealed the volume inside the intake will be lower.

^^lol!! but when I took it out, it was just a box, exactly the same as the one over under the airbox, which wasn't used for anything, I don't understand how a sealed box could hold air when it's solid plastic and it would have to expand and contract with the differing pressures,

that makes alot of sense to me.. its just a reservoir.. when the normal use of the airflow comes in.. when ur on the gas.. it saves some in the boxes.. so when u decide to slam on the gas it takes the reserved air from there plus the suction of the filter.. not much saved air though.. but still..loljoe

Of course it can't hold as much hot air as yours truly!:D

?? man i am lost on this one. if you where to have a box that had only one way into it. if you where to pull air out of it, it would have to get air from the same place your taking it from eliminating any use for it to suply air to your engine. know if it had some sort of bypass so it would not create a vacum in itself then i could see its ablitly to provide more air.

the resonator is vacuum locked. It wont release air without air coming into it from somewhere. Most likely when you open your throttle the air in that resonator wont even move. It will pull air past it from the intake. Removing the resonator in this case shouldnt do anything.

its hard to believe my little question started a war. I'm gonna take it out tonight, and ill post if there is any noticeable hesitation.

I took mine out, plugged the hole, nothing happened. Doesn't affect a darned thing.

well i just thought there would be a more direct path to the throttle body and no turbulence. I wonder what its called in the FSM. HINT HINT besides no matter how stupid it is it should have some kind of function. Would you through extra crap into an engine if you were an engineer? NO but what do i know

yes. same reason they stick 1 7/8 exhaust pipes, a million foot long intakes, and soggy suspensions on cars.. its more comfortable.

those are resonators, it keeps the intake quiet. companies would be criticised if they sold obnoxiously loud cars.

the reason some of you are having a laggy feeling is because you have longass large diameter intake pipes. shorten the intake pipe and the lag goes away.

it is designed to decrease the sound of a car, therefor it has a purpose. Old ladies that buy cars feel that there shouldn't be too much noise, therefor, they decrease noise as much as possible, as a general rule for ALL cars, so they don't keep coming into the shop, or they even buy the car in the first place

ok it serves a purpose.. just not a performance oriented one ;)

Yep. And engineers re-think and re-work things all the time, such as the AIV elimination on late model S14s, etc. Engineers have to crank cars out QUICK, and sometimes it's cheaper and more effective to play it safe than lab and shop time testing it.

the purpose its "working" for matters tho..

the THREE cats on the WRX "work".. but they still suck ;)

resonator boxes work.. they resonate and cancel out sound.. but they definately suck ;)
