Post

I've been using a company car exclusively for months and my poor 2008 Altima Coupe (2.5 manual transmission) has been sitting in the driveway neglected. Aside from an occasional weekly trip to the store or a short cruise around town every week to keep the battery charged it's just been sitting. This weekend I tried to start it and the battery is finally not up to the task. I get clicks, servo noise and instrument lights when I try, but the engine isn't even close to turning over.
I never thought I'd have to "store" my Coupe for any lenght of time, but my gas is also paid for in the company car and I have a 90-mile commute, so it's not like I can use the Coupe instead.
What are my options for starting it and recharging the battery at this point?
I use a Battery Tender for storing my Honda motorcycle. Can I hook it up to the Coupe's battery to recharge it to get it started? Can I use it to "tend" the 12v battery in my Coupe too or are there car-specific devices that are safer to use?
What other problems can I expect from letting the Coupe sit for such long periods unused? I know my brakes sure are looking rustier than they should be.
Does the computer have to be reset after losing power for an extended period?
I'm totally in the dark and would appreciate any insights and comments. I really never considered having to let my Coupe sit idle for long periods like this. I'm not only concerned about what it's done to the car so far, but since it looks like it will sit for quite a while longer how can I "store" it properly over the coming winter?
I just got it back from it's 30,000 mile service the day before it started hibernating and I love the car way to much to even consider selling it.

idk if you can get it into a garage, cuz than i would recommend looking into a trickel charger. it keeps the battery from loosing charge and going bad. Also i keep mine in the garage and try to drive it once a week but even it sitting in the garage it get's dirty from the wind kicking up dust and other small debris so i put the car cover on it. If your storing your's outside you may want to look into getting one so that when you do have to use your car it will be nearly brand new looking.

I agree about the car cover. UV damage is the worst thing ever, I love cars looking new and polishing faded clear coat and headlights is a pain.

I think the ecu resets itself automatically when repowered.

^This, unless you recharge the OEM and do this...

Should go away after a short drive and a couple cycles on the rotors, UNLESS it has penetrated and is no longer surface oxidation. Although it seems that you drive it semi-often (SEMI LOL) and that shouldnt be the case. (pause)

It does not, but like Mike x 2 said it will do so itself if it has been completely de-energized for more than 15 minutes (I think thats the time frame). If your battery is that dead that the ECU lost all power it will reset itself but it wont cause you a problem.

Thanks all. I think you've answered most of my questions. I think I'll pick up a second trickle charger and keep it connected. I don't have a garage, but I do have an outside electrical outlet within a few feet of the car. Not happy about having to have my motorcycle AND my car on life support over the winter, but as long as I'm getting free gas and a company vehicle I'll have to deal with it. (The company vehicle is a late-model Ford SUV with heated leather seats and all the bells & whistles, but I'd sure rather be driving my Coupe!)
I like the idea of adding a car cover to retard any UV damage while it sits idle. One of the new low points in my day is coming home and seeing my poor Coupe sitting in the driveway neglected. Maybe I won't feel so bad if I don't SEE my Code Red beauty screaming "drive me!" at the end of every day.
Thanks again for the assistance. There are so many members here with far more experience with the Coupe than I have. I appreciate the input!

if i were you, i wouldn't just "like" the idea of a car cover, i would go out and get the thing right away.
