So I'm looking to get rid of my 4runner SR5 and get a new toy. It'd be a daily driver/weekend warrior car. Something fun but reliable and easy to maintain and slowly modify. I've narrowed it down to two cars. Either a 1996-2001 Impreza coupe or S13 coupe. I've driven and owned both and loved them pretty equally. They each have their own pro's and con's and I can't decide.

Really the biggest hang up right now is the winters here in OKC, they are the worst but we do get some snow and ice occasionally. The Suby would do better in the winter with its AWD i think. Though they are a bit more difficult to work on and more $$ to mod.

Which do you guys think I should go with? I've found a few around here and really with the way S13's are being priced today there isn't much difference in the intial costs.

Half-assed thrown together buckets like this sell for 2k and up

I think do what you want. But if it was me, I'd get a GC8

It's up to you man whatever is best for your daily needs.
Imo that coupe looks like a cool project, but it's going to suck in the winter.
The subie would be a fun car too, and better in the winter

Im really surprised by the answers so far. I honestly love both cars and didn't expect to see much GC love here. Its a tough call when both car's are so sweet. Anyone else have any opinion or info that would help me make such a tough choice other than "anything other than a 240 sucks". I had a 02 impreza and had no problems with it, does anyone know if the earlier ones were known for anything?

I would go for the Subaru for a Daily Driver in your area with snow, you mentioned that modding it would be con but it's a daily so those kinds of things can come later.

i don't understand the logic of only doing a 5-lug swap in the back..it looks pretty beat lol. i'd go with the sub

I do. It's so you can run a decent staggered setup. There's plenty of inexpensive 17x9 & 17x9.5 wheels to run up front on a 4 lug 240. But if you wanna stagger the rear with anything wider than 9.5, you need to go 5 lug since the only 4 lug wheels that are wider than 9.5 inches are expensive really stuff like Work and SSR.

240 owners get a bad rep sometimes, but we're not stupid. Most of us are real car guys and can appreciate a different platform besides the one that we happen to drive. i say get the Suby as well if you can afford to do it the way you want. 240's are done to death.

that's a good point though i'd say from the way everything else was done on that car it was a cost based decision. Throw parts on as you get them type thing rather than save up and do everything together

Oh yeah, for sure! That car in that ad is a pile. I wouldn't look twice at it.

I was just saying that running 4 lugs up front and 5 lugs out back can make sense in certain conditions.

you live in oklahoma city too??
id say with our random snowstorms and flashfloods-the sub is the way to go
and if you have a garage id def pic the impreza(thinking about the hail storms)
they are pretty reliable, fun to drive, and can look really nice!
heres my roomates

but if wheels is the only thing holding you back..
diamond racing makes 4 lug wheels that are wiide so dont let that make your decision

Because people think front 5 lug swaps are too hard to find the right parts for the fronts, and they don't want to use Ichiba. Rear swaps are simple.

yeah coulda got it like 2 weeks ago for 1200 dollars. Someone bought it and is trying to make money on it now. It does run good though. I rode with him at the last oklahoma drift event. Theres a 95 impreza wagon here in town (about 3 hours away) needs a water pump and the guy said he'll trade for a tv. Heres a link.

that makes sense now..i'm running 17x9.5 all around so if i wanted to go bigger i would need a 5 lug swap unless pay a ton for rims..thanks bud :)

Here's a little list of good fitting and wide 4 lug wheels to select from:

:dblthumb: No problem. If you want to stagger on the cheap, I'd suggest some Z32 rear hubs for 5 lug and some 17x10 or 17x10.5 replica Mustang wheels.

$138 for a good looking 17x10.5 wheel... lol

Damn thats a tough choice personally those three, the suby the s13 coupe, and the suby are 3 of my top favorite cars.
If you get a Suby look out for front subframe rust, one of our members flatblackian(not sure if thats his exacty name) found some subys with horrific front subframe rust.
I would go for the suby if i could afford it, or an evo8 mr. The 240 mods are cheaper in general but your going to need more mods to make the 240 reliable and get anywere near the hp of the suby in stock form. With most 240's you have to do way to much regular maintance thats been neglected which is fuggin expensive!

I have both and my 2.5 RS (GC) chassis is fun in slippery stuff and not too difficult to work on I would go Subaru for DD wait i already do...

As much as I appreciate the 240sx, I'd say go for something you haven't owned before. I seem to go through cars about once a year, just trying something different. You only live once & it would be a shame to not have that new experience.
