Hi everyone,

I was wondering about a DC power splitter, I am constantly switching my sirius radio with my radar detector back and forth, I thought it would be best to get a splitter, I have found splitters online, with 2, 3 or even 4 sockets. Is this wise, how much can it take really before blowing a fuse? Anyone know or have experience with this?

Thanks

Never had a problem with dual splitters. Walmart or RadioShack will work too.

Buy a add-a-fuse mini and wire it up that way so thy turn on/off when you turn your car on/off.

Your Owner's Manual stats 12 Volts/120W/10Amps. Just to be safe, take a look at your Radar Detector and Radio Specs and make sure they don't exceed 10 Amps combined. Also, your Manual stats: Do not use double adapters or more than one electrical accessory.. So, if you ever have a problem - well, you know what to remove!

Owner's manual information is on pages 2-22 and 2-23.

They give the various standard warnings and limits on using the power plugs and splitters. You might take a look at the tolerance limits before you do it.

I find it humorous (or poor product design) that they warn against using the plug while the a/c, headlights, or rear window defroster is on. I guess they haven't figured out that in today's society we need to recharge our cell phones in the hot desert southwest. Bluetooth, yes. Power to the phone, no.

i bought an add a fuse and an extra 12 volt output and wired that in under the dash. I took off the piece on top of the dash where the 2 vents are and ran the wire for the radar thru three and put the piece back on. Worked out great, no mess and no wire cutting!! took me less then an hour to to everything

I installed a double outlet via a fuse addon that I mounted where an ash tray would be in a regular car, and I added an outlet inside my center console under the bottom where I "hardwired" my cell phone charger, so it looks like part of the car. (It isnt really hard wired, its just a hidden DC plug, but it looks hardwired) Its actually hidden under the center console, its an Ebay center console, the S doesn't come with one. SO I can plug in my radar detector, navigation, and anything else I may need to plug in without cluttering around the shifter/drink holder area.

Ok so along with all your input I did some more research, I found that some cheapo splitters will blow the fuses immediately and some other brands that people rave about on various sites. I decided to go to the auto parts store and take a look, I looked at my detector and radio, and they are both 12v, so I thought everything must be 12v [light bulb in my head]. The parts specialist told me that the car's socket will still read 12vs, but each item I plug in must be 12vs, there is a backup fuse in the splitter. So I just went for it, and it is fine so far, I opted not to get a crazy 3 or 4 splitter though, figured 2 would make me happy, ah my radio and my radar..........is that really too much to ask for?
