We recently moved from canada, and my j30 was equipped with DTRls. I really hate them. Does anyone know how to get rid of them? I found a DTRl relay in the fuse box.

search this forum, a member did the installation of a DTRL about a couple of months ago, i guess that could help you somehow.... , if you do remove it and have no need for the relay anymore, please let me know how much you want to sell it for, send me an e-mail

Stephen, I was doing the opposite operation - installing the DRL, I can help you when I get back home to Toronto in a week or so as I'm in a business trip now. You can take out the relay and you will need to shorten some wires. Though I'm not sure about the High Beam light on the cluster, I need to check out the diagram.

But before may I ask you what make you hating it ? I have installed the DRL and pay no attention to it I cannot even see it and the car actually looks "cool" with DRL. I heard some american guys do install the DRLs on some other cars for the car to look cool . This is of cause the matter of personal preference. Contact me in a week and a half on [email protected] and we will check together. I think it's my easier to downgrade it.

DRL's have been statistically proven to significantly reduce rear end and lane change collisions. Other than Canada, they are part of the manadatory safety package in all vehicles (basically the law) all over Europe and in a few Asian countries (i.e. South Korea, Singapore, Japan).

When I use to travel through the US with the J, I got many comments on how cool the DRL's looked. When I registered the J in Iowa ( I was working there for a year) and got auto insurance through Wells Fargo, I told them I had DRL's, they gave me a discount.

The headlights are on but dimmed.

Elan is our DRL expert, I'm sure he is quite capable in helping you uninstall them if you wish.

Elan, couple questions:

How complicated is it to convert over to the DTRL?

And is it possible to make this work with an HID kit?

Thanks for any help!

i doubt it would work with a hid. cuz the way the hids are, then can take voltages from like 9-18. my guess is that with DRL's the put out a lower voltage. so even if the hid would take the voltage, it would then put out the proper voltage from the ballist, and ignite the bulb to burn at full brightness....

thats just my guess, i might be wrong tho. a friend of my friend has a toyota matrix, and he installed hid lights, and he had to disable the DRL's on his matrix.

John,

It took me approx 6 hours of work. And may be about 6 hours to prepare and analyze. I have started writing the guide here but last few weeks I'm traveling a lot on business so I did not have a chance to complete it yet.

I have some doubts about DRL and HID, I wanted to do this myself. When DRL is activated it connects low and high beam lights in serial so the voltage on each light is only part of the system voltage. I think it will be working with HID only if HID balast can work with partial voltage, which I doubt. I do not think the intensity of light on HID depends on the input voltage the same way as without HID.

That would be amazing! Considering I just installed HID in my J.

But yeah, I don't think it's possible. Would be so cool though!

Elan, how much did the whole thing cost to put DRL's in?

Breakdown approx:

- The DRL module - approx C$230- wires, and stuff - approx C$30-40- 6 hours of my time

Canadian Tire claimed they could install some DRL for C$125 but I did not want to let their hands get into my baby
