So as some of you know, I had a friend who had challenged my 03 M45 to a 1/4 mile race. The track here in Albuquerque had opening day this past Saturday. Let me tell you I had an absolute blast. For 15 bucks you can't beat it. I was worried about being the slowest car out there. I'll have you know that our cars are not drag cars by any means. But I they are not sleds either.
So as a refresher, I'll remind you that BMW boy who challenged me has been chirping for months about his 545i and how he can beat me by 7 car lengths this and that. Now granted he should beat me, but not by 7 car lengths. So, we set a time this Saturday to run the cars a few times. Needless to say he was a no show. Yup, thats right, no show and no answering phone calls.
So I say screw it and I'm going to run the car a few times just out of curiosity. Now, before I post my best time and you guys start saying WTF, that is slow as hell, let me tell you about a little variable called altitude. The track here is at 5200ft. Unless your forced induction don't expect any eye popping results. I will say that stock Mustang GT's, G35 Coupes, 350'z, Camaros, and Charger Rt's where all running in 16's. Yes, low 16's!
I could not get the damn tree down either. I kept telling myself that when that last yellow light turns on punch it but my reaction times sucked so I always left a few tenth of a seconds after it was green It's not as easy as I thought. Anyway Between my reaction times and my Good Year RSA turds that I have on my best time was a 15.7 at 93 mph trap speed. My best 0-60 I think was 6 seconds. It was nice to know that other stock cars out there where performing worse, so at almost 3900lbs and my 230lb fat @$$ I think the times were decent. If I only knew how to launch I probably could have shaved a few 10ths off. The manager of the track owns a 545i and his best was 15.4. So Sorry to tell BMW boy that his 7 car lengths are about as much of a dream as the size of his member. Some how I think he knew this.
I ran 6 runs all day. 1st race was against some really souped up Camero, older 90's model with some crap sticking off the hood. I thought to myself, great, first race and I'm going to get smoked. We take off and I just leave him. Apparently he was just spinning back there and when he finally got his act together it was too late I had already crossed.
Second race was against a RSX turbo. I beat him off the line but at the 1/8 his boost kicked on and laterz to me. I think he ran a 14.3 or something.
Next race was against a big diesel turbo Chevy truck. He had some mods on it too for sure. Thank god I smoked him because the black smoke coming out of that thing was so thick I would have not been able to see where I was going. He ran a 17 something, that run was a 15.8 for me.
Next race was a Pontiac G6 GT. No competition! I ran a 15.7 and he ran a 17.4 and he beat me off the line.
Next race was a 350z. Beat um with a 15.8. He ran 16 flat.
Last race was a old 90's Camero. This guy was wearing a helmet and is required if your running under 14. I knew I had no chance. He beat me by about a car and half. I think he was shocked himself.
My wife took some video which I hope to post soon. I'm hoping it isn't to shaky. I have my time slip also for all the naysayers, but trust me I'm not bragging about a 15.7. But I will say be proud of your M's guys, it's no slug and I represented that this weekend. I shut the announcer up when racing the Z when he said "We have a 350z going up a grocery getter".
Thought I would share my story with everyone. It was so much fun and very humbling at the same time.
And remember... Altitude is a killer on naturally aspirated vehicles.
Oh yea, one more thing. Albuquerque has some really FAST cars. I was surprised.Don't mess with Subaru's either. There were hatchbacks 2.5Gt's running mid 14's and STI's running high 12's
Laterz...Jeff
