Hello,

First time poster. I own a 70 model srl311, bought it it this October 2015. She's a beauty. I'm restoring it on my own. So far so good, I have the engine looking and running beautifully and all interior parts and exterior chrome ready. Just doing the mechanical stuff before sending to the paint shop. SO I want to replace the clutch, I have everything disconnected and bolts out and then the question hit me:
Do I need to remove the entire engine and transmission together just to do a clutch? I can do it; it just sucks that I started in the wrong order I guess..lol and there's no reason to disconnect and pull out my engine, it's purty and runs so good.
Let me know if this is the case or if in fact there's a way to do a clutch with the engine in the car. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Murcie,

I've done many little cars, British, American, Japanese and I ALWAYS pull the engine and gearbox as a unit.

Get it on the floor, break the gearbox from the engine, put the clutch in, bolt it all back together. It's MUCH, MUCH easier to align the clutch plate with the crankshaft end (for installing the gearbox) when things are in plain sight, right in front of you.

You'll be glad you did.

Jim's right. ALL of my Datsuns are way easier to do a clutch with the engine and trans out of the car.

Welcome aboard - Lots of great info and resources here for Datsun restorers!

Thanks so much fellas! I kinda felt that I was going to end up doing that but thought I'd get some feedback from the more experienced roadster owners.

Make sure to start another thread with some pics of the old gal - We'll be here through the restoration, and if we can't help, we know someone who can!
