Hey there 320 fans,

Here are a few pics of the rebuilt E1 from LipStick Red. Going back in today. I will use these pics and work up a parts list for external gaskets and seals and then later on work the internal parts list.

If you have any questions or need a part number(s) and where to purchase just let me know.

A few more pics are here in Flickr-

Truckie,
What's the gold on the front parts? Paint or plating?

Steve,

That's just gold engine paint from the parts store. Needed to add a little bling to the engine compartment. Easier to see the timing marks too.

Air cleaner is Krylon's Bahama Sea Blue from your chain art store/hardware store.

Cool. I've never seen the brace that runs from the intake manifold up to the air cleaner.

Truckie,
Reason I ask about the gold is, I met up with a Datsun guy who is restoring a very early 520 pickup and a mid-60's Nissan Patrol and has a beautiful early 240Z in Dallas TX area and I got a look at his 520 that is about 80% done a couple weeks ago. Bloody breathtaking work. he had a lot of the little gizmos in the engine room replated and I asked him if it was cadmium/iradite and he told me it was yellow zinc. I haven't seen a showroom early Datsun, but the trinkets were knockout. Here is the source for the white and yellow zinc:

The plating company I use for white & yellow zinc plating for small parts is:
TEXAS PRECISION PLATING, INC.
http://www.texasprecision.net/

He told me that he saves up a good small box of goodies and has them done in one run. Seems it is about $80. for a couple of pieces or a small box full. I have yet to contact thjem but it's on the 'Hubcap List'. Kinda like a 'Bucket LIst'.

Steve,

Thanks for that information, I've already downloaded the brochure. This is definitely something to look into for coating the carb linkage, a few rear brake pieces, gas/oil filler caps, and a few other electrical pieces if you want to stripe them totally down.

I've used Lorax in Wichita, KS for some of my powder coating. but with this info I can make a few calls around the KCKS/MO area and see who does this type of work locally.

Appreciate the info,
Andy

Conner,

Yip, that's what the inside hole/nut is for on front/inside of the air cleaner. Around the on the back side should be a metal loop and bolt attaching the choke cable air cleaner (see bottom pic) and on the back side by the brake/clutch MC (see second pic) is a place where a larger metal loop and bolt go to keep the heater hose off of the shift linkage.

I think most of the time these are missing or broken off as you cannot remove the air cleaner with these items attached.

Give me a few and I'll get you a better pic. I think I have the correct attachment for the air cleaner somewhere.

Was a copper heater tube in the photo (https://www.flickr.com/photos/113742723 ... 6933454918) original to the E-1? (I am rebuilding a J13 and I have not seen this tube in any old photos.)
Thanks,
Keith

Truckie is the expert on these but my original heater tube is rubber all the way and goes from the water pump intake hose back by the carb. There is a clamp that holds the hose to the air cleaner then goes around the back of the engine to the heater in -pipe.I think you should be able to see the route on the parts list.
Note: this is an E-1engine.

Zed1,

No, sorry Zed1, copper tubing from hardware store.

OE heater hose wraps around the back of engine along the firewall (first metal loop is attached to the top/driver side heater box nut), up to the air filter and attached with another metal loop, over to yet another metal loop on the front inner fender, before attaching to the "accident waiting to happen" outlet OE lower radiator rubber hose.

I went this route to avoid having the 6 foot + hose running around my motor. I like the set up you see, but could not find the metal loops to fit on the head bolts and of course I do not like having the metal loops attached to head bolts that are supposed to be torqued down.

Let me get you a pic.

Under the air filter. Looks like I'm missing a loop (back air cleaner) and the heater hose has fallen out of the one loop in the left of the photo -

I thought it attached to the fender well here, maybe mistaken -

And attached back to the lower radiator hose or in this case the aftermarket water pump.

Does your J13 not have the outlet in the head with the return in the block? Here's a pic of my J13 -

Outlet in head TO heater core, top. RETURN in block from heater core, bottom.

Very nice.

I would guess you have an early J13 without the heater hose outlet from the head and the canister oil filter. My J13, again guessing mine is a later version with outlet in the head and spin on oil filter, came with the vehicle data plate and was used by the previous owner as a display podium for his saddle business/trade. He was a big Roy Rogers fan.
