Hi im new to the forum. Just bought a 1972 Datsun 521 L16. The pickup did not run when I bought it. Managed to get it started, put new plugs, adjust single point distro, seemed to idle fine and ran it around the block. Today the car made a noise and I found the crank nut and washer on the ground it was loose the pulley almost came off but it did not!
I put the pulley back and torqued the nut. I presume crank to cam timing is okay. Now truck idles very rough, (like badly out of time) I checked compression all 140/150. Put piston #1 at TDC, both valves appear closed ( I don't have a timing mark on the block??) I noticed that piston ones plug was like new, no combustion, also when piston 1 at TDC and valves closed, rotor is in position between post 1 and 3 on the distributor cap cant figure out, it ran fine just before crank nut came of now this> Long winded, sorry, thats where I be at now with the truck
Help appreciated. Thanx

Well, decided to dig in, pulled off the timing chain cover, chain was off by one whole link (2 pins). Cam plate was flipped backwards hiding the groove "_" so fixed that. Cam gear was set at 2, I moved it back to 1.

The oil pump gear was on the wrong way, supposedly the flat face has to face forward. The oil slinger was missing, replaced that, got it at a local Nissan dealer. Same part for the Z's (240 and 280) Set #1 Piston to TDC, Cam lobes where at 2 and 10, Set dizzy shaft. Voila fired right up. With the crank pully moving forward the oil pump gear which also turns the dizzy moved forward, causing the dizzy shaft to go out of time.

Piston #1 had a bad wire, replaced the set and spark strong to all 4 cylinders, Compression remained the same.

If anyone has doubts about cam/chain timing, pull the cover off and check. It's easy, quick, and at least you will find out if it was done right. I bought this pickup with new head, timing chain, etc etc, but it was put on wrong, I hope the head part was done a little better, but so far so good. Hope this helps someone.
