I have a 2009 SL. I drove at night for the first time last night and noticed that the tach-speedometer were illuminated when the key was turned on. These lights then dimmed when I turned on the headlights and can be controlled with the control knob to darken or brighten the illumination. I can not find out if this is normal in the manual or service manual.Thanks.

This is how it should work on all vehicles. You need brighter instrument lighting during the day (i.e. headlights off) to overcome the brighter ambient light levels.

Except when you have Daytime Running Lights. This is going to fool some people into thinking their lights are on when it gets dark, and drive around with their DRLs on. If the dash were dark, it would give them more of a clue!

DRL or not, it is a safety non sense to me as I see more and more people driving with their lights off at night. Since they can see their dashboard, they think their lights are on.It is nice as you can bring nice colors to a dashboard by illuminating it but it is a safety hazard without the autolight feature.

At least the Rogue has a little green indicator light on the instrument panel when the head lights are on. My wife's 2006 Altima does not have an indicator saying if the lights are on. I've even checked the manual. It doesn't have one. That's just crazy...
