As the title says when I turn the car on the dash lights come on and when you turn the head lights on the dash lights go out. Its in a 91 coupe and help would be great

I may be pointing out the obvious, but did you check the dash light dimmer switch to make sure it's not turned all the way down?

Ya it dimmed the lights when the head lights were off its almost like maybe a pug is backwards but I've never tore into the cluster before and was looking for so guidance before I started messing with it

I'd start by looking for a dash light relay of some kind.
Try poking through the factory service manual.

Have you found the fix to this? Mine does the same thing and is yours a Digital speedo cluster with HUD or analogue?
Mines a 89 digital cluster for ka24e everything else seems to work. Any advice on things to check where exactly to look, or if there is an easier route? Or else I will be forced to create a subharness+switch for the cluster lighting (which would be kinda cool but meh)... trying not to waste money taking it to someone who will probably tell me it's my perfectly working switches.

Ok i got some more information that could be useful... try using standard bulbs see if the problem persists sometimes LEDs can cause this from what im told.

Also check the diodes pins etc make sure everythings working like it shows in the fsm the illumination circuit travels across some diodes on the back of the cluster although im not totally sure that would create this issue if say one was bad.

From what i been told the tcu doesn't cause this I've checked mine with a multimeter readings seemed good.

Check the connections on the cluster and for any signs of damages as well, the thing is pushing beyond its life expectancy and may need careful soldering and electrical maintenance ($100+ if you can find a good electricical technician)

Hope that helps ill work on mine some and edit in results, if anyone has some good input please don't hesitate to add driving at night not seeing the temp is most risky...
