I'm planning on replacing those nasty, boring dash lights in my 1990 240sx with blue lights, including the LEDs behind the rear defroster button and the vent buttons. It's all going blue. Is there anywhere I can look to find the following information (before I pull off my dash):

How many bulbs will I need to complete the project (I'm assuming 12v push-in bulbs)?

What's required in replacing the LEDs?

Is there anyone or anywhere out there that could provide a pic (or pics) of what the gauge cluster and climate controls will look like once I've removed the dash?

Has anyone else done this? If so, how long did it take and what was involved?

Thanks everyone for your help!

my guages on my s14 are nice and red now. i just used the red bulbs and there were only 3 of them to light up the gauge cluster. i wanted to change all the lights in the car to red but some of them i just couldnt do (the climate control thing, clock, and the power window button. i dont think it is possible to change those bulbs. they are very small bulbs and are covered in those little lightbulb condoms.

Blue light conversion sounds good, but have you ever driven a car that had blue lights? My girlfriend had a 2001 Jetta VR6 and the night lighting was all blue LED's (stock) and it was damn terrible. Think about it this way:

Red LED's / light in general is excellent for your night vision, hence the reason behind the new wave of military vehicles using it. Blue is on the opposite end of the spectrum and the rods and cones in your eyes have trouble attenuating to it for hours on end. The result is head aches and blury vision. If you don't believe me, drive a VW for a half an hour at night and if your eyes don't start watering then your more of a man than I am!!!

Yeah the blue is hard to see at night. Go for the red or amber. If you're going to get the PIAA LED's, they don't disperse light as widely as the regular bulbs, just FYI.

The S13 analog gauge clusters use 5 #194 bulbs to illuminate the gauges, as for the HVAC controls and buttons, the bulbs are much smaller. As far as I know the smallest bulbs that can be had in Hyper White or colored are #194's. We sell them all the time and work great in the S13's as well as autometer gauges. Polarg Bulbs ( what we sell ) are imported from Japan and are made from actual colored glass, not painted and WILL NOT fade... the Hyper White Bulbs are xenon gas charged which is quite amazing for a small bulb.

The LED replacement 194's dont work very well in anything but marker lights because they are too focused and will cause the gauges to look spoty at night.

Be glad you dont have a nissan from 1999 and up, all the bulbs in their cluster are #74 which no one makes in any colors.

autolumination says 194 can be used to replace 192 and others... but on autodynamic they dont have 194, but they have a 192... so i know you can use 194 to replace 192... BUT can you use 192 to replace 194 ? curious... incase i order them

sry to dig this thread back up, but its good info =D.

So how many bulbs are needed exactly to completly change out the gauge cluster?

I am hoping to get white face gauges/ light blue bulbs (to light up the numbers and such..)/ and amber needles.

how many in total will be needed...

bulbs - 3 ? (well i heard that 3 is needed but does that include the clock light as well ?)

needles - 4 ^ is there any modification neccesary to change out the needle color ?

oh and i think my low fuel light is out or something cuz it nevers turns on...(and i mean never...even after the E line). What number is that LED or bulb ?
