it's not htat hard, the dhash you need to pull the metal cover between it and the windshield which had 4 or 5 phillips head screws, then you can see the 4 ro 5 10 mm head bolts holding the top of the dash in, there is a couple more at the bottom of each end and a couple more on each side of the trans tunnel, you will have to lower the steering colums which is just a couple more bolts and pull the steering wheel, and there are a handfull of electrical connections at each eng and around the column, a few more in the center and a handful of plastic ducts to disconnect, it sounds more difficult than it is, the S30 is the easiest dash I have ever removed

and if you are just replacing gauges and bulbs you don't have to pull the dash, there is just one or 2 bolts holding each gauge in, really small, like 7 or 8mm, kinda hard to get to without pulling the dash but not too bad, and if it's just the bulbs they pop in from the back and you don't even have to pull the gauges

if you

I think applying the cap is easier whith the dash installed int he car, that way it's held in place and straight, so you can push and press the cap on and know that it's not gonna pop off when you start to reinstall it, but I havn't personaly done a dash cap so your way may be better, I just thought you were gonna pull the dash just to change gauges and it's pretty easy to get to them withthe dash in the car, let us know how it wroks out
