Over half of the country is bracing for yet another winter storm that could bring temps to record lows. Northeastern Montana could reach -59*. :ohno: I can't even fathom that level of cold. Some cities have actually banned cars traveling on the roads and the state of Minnesota closed ALL of its schools tomorrow. The cold is spreading south too. It's supposed to be in the 30s in certain parts of Florida.

For those of you who live in the path, what are you doing in order to prepare for the storm? What happens if you lose power and the heat goes out? What kind of back up heat sources do you have? Do you still have to get up and go to work or is your business closed?

You know you miss living down here, don't you? :) I went to WalMart to grab some stuff we needed for dinner and it was crazytown, the French Toast Warning was in full effect.

I have a natural gas fireplace I can light if I lose power. I also have 4 cars I can fire up and run and sleep in if need be. I'm not too worried about it though.

We just experienced a low of 5°F. Right now @ 1am it's 58°F, while Monday night it's supposed to go back down to 8°F.
And here's this little tidbit,
Image
With -31 temp in Canada it's colder than Mars. Finally a slogan to go to Mars: "Come to Mars, its warmer than Canada and no one says Eh?"

I just love the silly nonsense our media puts out. Mars' warmest daytime temp hardly compares to one of the coldest places normally at this time of year in the states. Especially when the nighttime is like -150 or something like that.

If I lose power I'm going down the street to mom's house. I never got around to having my fireplace cleaned so that's not an option. I'm not worried though. On the few occasions we lose power, my zip code for whatever reason tends to be among the first restored.

I keep blankets in the cars in case of an emergency.

With all the weather hype, you'd think it never gets cold in this country. Living along a snow emergency route and on the same local grid as our town's fire department, my power outages are normally brief. I suppose if cuddling with the puppies and eating copious amounts of Mexican Food does not generate enough heat, I have nice neighbors who use their fireplaces with whom we could hang out.

So far this morning it's 7 degrees here. It was in the low 30's last night before I went to bed.

It was hilarious going to Walmart yesterday afternoon. All of your common food items were nearly wiped out and the bread was completely gone.

Every school locally was shut down this morning too and driving into work most fast food joints were shut down as well. Everyone was driving like they've never seen snow or cold weather before. I just blew right by them, found an open McDonalds for some coffee and breakfast, then headed right on to the office.

Silly people around here. The first big snow of the year, there is an inch on the ground so far and they're acting like it's a snowpocalypse. :rotfl

Every school in Chicago is closed. Right now it's -15F with a wind chill of -45F. It's cold. Could only walk my dog for 5 min. to keep him safe.

I wore shorts and flip flops today. Although I admit it was a little chilly for the flip flops before about 2PM.

Can't say I miss the midwest right now - I used to live in Kansas City. Ice storms are no fun. And for those of you that are familiar with KC, here's the fountains that they died red for the Chiefs. lol

Columbus Ohio
-8 with wind chill at -32 right now. I have portable generator for emergency power if needed. I have separate electrical panel for all needed essentials, gas forced air heating and lighting, fridge. We also have gas fireplace too.

I spent a few years living in northern Canada and I would like to say I'm used to the cold, but this is really cold stuff. My blood must have thinned out a little bit over the years.

Extra blanket night.

Picked a hell of a morning to lock myself out of the house. Had to take shelter from the single digit temps and wind by hiding like a hobo in the basement bulkhead.

I have multiple friends back home who are without power and no secondary heat source. Here's hoping that the weather turns soon. :frown: I'm not even going to gloat about our weather out here right now. I just wish you guys could catch a break.

Wow. I hope your friends are able to get to a warm shelter. We had to learn the hard way, so we picked up a portable generator and spare heaters a few years back.

It's a whopping 6F in Delaware. This weekend they're forecasting a high of 58F on Saturday. Maybe I should break out the shorts.

Kerosene heaters are awesome for emergency heat. Hell they're awesome for heat period. I also have a large power converter that I plug into my car and run an extension cord from if we lose power. It's enough to power a light, and 2 laptops...keep the phones charged etc. Worst case, we pile into my van watch a movie and play games like we're camping or something.

We also have a propane grill if we need to cook something. Yup, sucks standing at the grill with my winter jacket, hat and gloves, but I'm not starving either. It's called roughing it people!

Americans are spoiled rotten crybabies.

Yeah it's cold out, but I don't understand the craziness. It snows every year, it gets cold every year. Cold is cold. When you lose power in the winter, your life sucks. It doesn't have to be 1 degree out for things to suck, they'll suck just as bad if it's 25 degree's and you lose power. If you're completely unprepared for winter, guess what dumbass, you're gonna have a rough time of it. Chance favors the prepared.

Pretty crazy. -10 to -20 is pretty common around here, but negative 50 and lower is insane. I'm a terrible person, but I'm a terrible person who loves the heat, so it warms my heart to hear that there are places colder than Rexburg.

Freak.

ALL of my colleagues had to stock the trucks in around 4* this morning and we just couldn't operate the same. And we're used to below 20 temps this time of year... I can't feel the difference beyond that temp, personally, except that I can actually get warm if I work hard in 20 degrees. This sh*t was ridiculous.
