i know that when the boots crack, dirt gets inside, seal fails, starts leaking......but what if the boot isn't cracked, but IS damp? i suppose dirty fluid in the system would cause the seals to leak over time---anyother reason why a boot might get wet [excluding external factors like something else dripping from the outside]?

It's very possible that it's something else dripping down. I'd clean them up with brake parts cleaner - then check the fluid on it again in a day or so. If it's red you're probably looking at a P/S leak under the boots.

Non-chlorinated Brakleen should be easier on the boot. How's the PS fluid level?

Most brake cleaner is perchloroethelene (Perc in the dry cleaning business).

i'll know more later tonite, as I've got another member in san diego going to take a peek for me. but, the owner mentioned that fluid was barfing out the reservoir and that he replaced the pump with a used one and now it's ok, but there's a 'drop or two' on the driveway every few days [sounded like near the rack, but sketchy at the moment].

the foaming sounds like air got in the system. presumably the level is full now, but i don't think that would say much about the past.

btw, the guy just had the vc gaskets done.

A slight seep from the rack is nothing to worry about. Just change the fluid with fresh a few times, add 1 oxzof Marvel Mystery Oil each time to rejuvinate the seals slowly and gently. Unless its leaving puddles, be happy!
