after reading through the search answers, i believe either i have some seriously F'ed up synchros or im just out of transmission fluid.

the car shifts fine between every gear and reverse when the cars not on, but when it is all hell breaks loose.i have to shove it as hard as i can a few times to go in first, and when i shove it into reverse i feel a jerk.

if i was low/out of fluid, then wouldnt it not shift when the car is off either?

if i have to get a new transmission, i might as well buy another KA and trans with less miles from somebody who has switched to SR or CA.

pull the plug on the bottom of ur transmission. fluid is cheap and u may just need to change it. or nothing will come out and u should try putting some in there :)

Is it a 5speed? if it is it may be the clutch. if the clutch is not releasing all the way that would make it easy to shift when not on but hard when the car is running. it would also make the car jump a little if you have the e brake off and take your foot off the brake.

I had that problem with a bad pilot bushing and throw-out bearing.....but it quite possibly could be the transmission. Did it make any squealling noises bfore this happened?

The ka24de transmission's are NOTORIOUS for terrible synchro's. Hell, even my transmission does a lil of this, but I flushed her out a lil bit ago and filled her up with mobil 1 full. synthetic gear oil.

Even daunt has this problem, wouldn't worry too much unless its unshiftable.

It sounds like the clutch isn't releasing all the way. If it was out of fluid or the syncros were bad it would not jerk when you put it into gear as there would be no power applie to the trans. to make it jerk.

i agree with the blown clutch idea. try pumping it a bunch of times before you shift it into gear and see if it makes it any easier. if it does, then you have a hydraulic problem.
