Ok, so somethings gotta give...Im splitting internet w the people who live under me in my house, they have some low end $20 router, and my farthest access point (my desktop) has a no-name wifi card in it from ebay.

Theres a floor, and 2 rooms separating the desktop I use and the damn router... Techie help pls!

On a bad day I cant get a connection... most of the time its 2-5mbps...

I think something needs to be replaced, should I replace the router, or my card?

Some cards I was looking athttp://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...57831

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...56916

Theres a bajillion routers out there, IDK whats good/bad.

Also I have money issues right now, if anyones got something thats "old" to them but would be an upgrade to me, pls let me know!

you are complaining about 2-5 mb/s?I think the couple of walls between you and the access point might be the reason.Simply buying a more expensive router won't necessarily increase your connection speeds. Also, in my experience, most wifi cards are made the same. Same goes with MOST of the routers out there. Only thing that really separates them is features/ports/etc. Though, I'm no expert so...

That's debatable. Very debatable. They're notoriously short-lived. I've gone through 3 of them over the past 4 years (currently on the 4th). I'd rather pay $20 for a crappy router than $40 for a crappy router. Yeah, the linksys has a lot of good features and is easy to configure, but for the price I'd like a little better than a ~1 year lifespan.

I have a Netgear WRG614 that I have had constantly on for 2 years and counting.. Never one problem. I bought one for my Moms house when I lived there 4 or 5 years ago and it has been on for that amount of time with no problems. This is the reason I always recommend Netgear Routers.. I have had nothing but trouble out of Belkin, Linksys, and D-link over the years but never one out of the four Netgear networks I manage.

You could always buy a signal relay point...

Keep the old router but allow it to go further...

Well the thing is that it varys btwn 1-11mbps sometimes.. but the little monitor in my taskbar always has 1, MAYBE 2 bars...

Whats a signal relay point? Expensive? The solution?

Like even when it says 11mbps it still has a weak signal strength.

You could use something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-...9SFMG

It's a signal repeater - aka it acts as a middleman between points - they're used to extend range - i didn't really search much, but im sure you can find some for decently inexpensive.

One or both of your devices is 802.11b which is why you're maxing out at 11mbps and could be why your signal quality is poor. I would check to see if your router supports 802.11g and if it does - pick up an 802.11g wireless adapter for your PC. G has better range and throughput than B however they are both susceptible to interference from devices that run in the 2.4ghz range (Cordless Phones, Microwaves, etc..) 802.11n has the best range and throughput but from the sound of it I doubt that your router supports this...

Heck - I think I have a PCI Wireless-G adapter laying around somewhere... If you're in a real pinch just shoot me an e-mail and its yours..

Loaded DDWRT onto that and increase the wireless output from 22mW to 85mW. That'll fix your problem

The 614 is a horrible router. I have one. It has 1MB of RAM and 4~8MB of rom.

It cannot support any features at all. Is not modifiable. And on top of that has bad wireless range.

Those are overpriced POS. You can buy any Linksys WRT54.. series and flash DDWRT onto it. This gives you many more functions in addition to wireless repeater/bridge.

.... ...or they're a useful tool if you are out of the wireless range of your router and need to extend the range.

"If you need wireless coverage, consider using more than one Access Point..." - straight off theDDWRT site....

It's not always about giving more power to the signal - if there is too much crap in the way, then there is too much crap in the way and the only way to get around it is to go around it.

Works perfect for me. All I use it for at them moment is to get my internet from there, to here.. I have full signal connection anywhere I go in the house and even in the back yard in the garage.

Not a big deal though.. It is just to hole me over until I get my server/router machine built..

Double post.. F' it... I have been seriously considering buying a router that supports Tomato and trying it out.. I have heard lots of good things..

Also, I have heard about a lot of "back doors"/ loopholes in DDWRT.. Anyone care to elaborate on that if you know what I'm talking about?

I said just buy a linksys router. Flash it with DDWRT. That'll give you the ability to make it a wireless repeater. THis is cheaper then a dedicated repeater, but functions the same.

Tomato and DDWRT are very similar.

Tomato is liked by some for its more GUI friendly interface. DDWRT isnt hard, but you have to google alot of the settings to find out what they do.

With that said, DDWRT supports more hardware. If tomato works with your router go for it. You'll get the same features as DDWRT.

And no, there arn't any know backdoors in any of the modified firmwares.

The 614 would definately be improved by putting DDWRT on it, but it's antenna configuration is a little lacking. Maybe upgrade that also, and increase the power output to 85mW would be a huge improvement.

It is almost impossible to brick a router.

Just try it and see. If you have an issue plug your computer directly into your cable modem to get instructions on how to reset it to factory firmware.

I've done numerous routers and never had an issue that couldn't easily be fixed.
