Ok as a few of you might know I have had an 84 200sx for a good bit of time now. Well the damn thing just keeps pissing me off. We got it running again today and it was idleing great. I repeatedly cut it off and restarted it. Then I let it sit for about half and hour go back and the damn thing wont idle again. I don't know excatly why it does this. We think it is a grounding problem. I just thought I would vent about it for a few seconds. Also it only has 118k miles and is in excellent shape other than the running part. :(

I don't want to swap though. This is a daily driver if I ever get it running. Besides if I swap it the I am going CA18DET. I would rather swap that into the 240 though and reep the benifits of good gas milage from the 200.

How much rust or road soot is on the block/engine cradle? Those 200sx motors have cast iron just like the 240's do, right? Oxydized cast iron is not as good a electrical conductor when hot. The opposite is true with aluminum and that can cause obvious trouble too. A dirty cradle can stop electrical impulses from travelling to the rest of the frame. If it is cast iron, i would suggest finding all the grounds on the engine and bonding them either to the battery or the frame. It should take about 2 hours at most.

Just an electrician's point of view. I think you were right as long as its a cast iron block.

Yeah I have the CA20E which is a cast iron block. I'll try that, but it just seems so damn odd the way it is doing this. I hope I can secure a ground and fix it. That would be nice. I really need to get this car on the road though since I wont be able to use my 240 at work soon.

I feel for you, I drive an 89 240 sx. your car got 5 years on my "baby" though.

If the grounds are bad, why not try one of those ground kits off ebay for 30 bucks? I've seen a couple of them dyno tested, they always seem to come up with a couple HP, and if you take an hour or two with a digital multimeter (20 bucks at walmart) you could eliminate the grounds as the source of the problem. or just eliminate the problem.

Welcome to the painfull world of getting a Datsun to idle. Im fighting with my 620 truck and the 210 wagon now. The wagon died on me about 2 weeks ago and we miss the mileage already.
