east haven, ct has been under fire for quite a few years now for their treatment of their latino community. we've reached an all-time low. now, as a latino i'm not quite outraged, but really? this is embarrassing.

http://www.courant.com/community/east-h ... 4089.story

your police force is out of control, and your solution to appease the latino community in your town is to eat tacos?

Heh, I heard the taco comment on my way to work, and I started wondering how one might actually answer that question, if you haven't actually taken any policy steps to specifically help latinos.

I could imagine myself saying it AND IMMEDIATELY LAUGHING TO ENSURE EVERYONE KNOWS IT'S A JOKE. I capitalize because I care, and because that was the step this guy missed.

If its anything like NOVA, they needed border patrol and child protective services there too.

Ok that sounded a bit racist. I love tacos... and nachos... and salsa... and margaritas... and burritos... and coronas

Yeah, that Virginia/Mexico border is a real problem.

ok, i understand new haven basically invited illegals into the area, but the police mercilessly beating them and harassing anyone of latino descent was s*** (i will literally pull over at the east haven town line and do a walk-around of my vehicle before entering the limits). then the whole generalization that all latinos eat tacos made me . but not for nothing, i would have openly welcomed one of those trays of tacos.

you all know that i'm on the lesser extreme of sensitive, but being a member of the community that's being persecuted regularly in that town, i can't help but still feel some type of way. the douche needs to resign. blatant stereotyping, coupled with complete disregard for the years of harassment the town's law enforcement has displayed for the lawful treatment of its citizens is unacceptable. this isn't a one-time f***-up, it's a culmination of years of s***.

Honestly and truly I do see your argument. I would be somewhat offended in your shoes.

I'm not disagreeing with that at all.
But I'm not going to get all bent out of shape because I happen to like corned beef and cabbage like my stereotype says I would.

I wouldn't worry about the guy resigning, but you could probably bet he won't get re-elected as long as there are voting Latinos in the area. (unless they're mostly illegals)

corned beef and cabbage is an irish staple. tacos are not a latino staple. besides, it was his plan to eat said tacos as a way to support and calm disgruntled community members that is particularly insensitive, ignorant, and disgusting coming from a town mayor.

You think he was trying to calm the members of the community? LOL
It was obviously a brainlessly quick remark having no intention of any planned action. This is what I mean as being sensitive, I can't read that as being anything more as him not thinking well enough before he said what he did.

Also, corned beef and cabbage is not an Irish "staple". It wasn't invented until the Irish came to America.
But I don't care, because that ish is delicious.

and having no contingency plan for making his community members feel at ease makes his remark permissible as faux pas and the people he offended and ignored for years sensitive?

A faux pas is one thing, but what it actually was is another, come on... The public whining about an obvious mistake is a bit much. But not the thousands of tacos part, that was pure genius; an appropriate reaction that will most definitely get results.

yes, it was a mistake. but it also showed how blatantly ignorant he is as to who actually makes up the latino community in his town. for years his officers have been openly harassing latino citizens and business owners and he did nothing about it. you would think that he would have put some thought into researching who is being wrongfully persecuted and bullied in his town, he's had plenty of time. but he didn't, he doesn't care.

But are you more offended to be in Tita's shoes because of his "ethnicity" or because of his friendship with Nala? :)

indeed, in general conversation with people i know that comment would have been laughed off and never mentioned again, but out of the mouth of a public official it was quite inappropriate.

i'm just mad all those tacos went to waste for a joke/point/stunt. . . poor tacos.

Tito, if you ever need a legitimizing wingman to travel through East Haven, lemme know. I'll ride with you.

No, no, Tito drives a Ford Asploder now. I have no interest in being handed the keys to that.
