Hey guys,

If you reconize the name, I have had some problems with my 90 240sx with SR20. Anyway, she is running good again, but I am driving around 75 miles a day back and forth to school. Between gas prices for premium and putting the miles on the car that I'd rather not put on her! I have some money saved up just to get another daily driver and then I can do alot more to my 240sx without worrying about getting me back and forth to school. I have read alot of people have civics as there back ups. I am sure they are reliable and everything, I am just not sure if I can force myself to buy a HONDA!!! Or I will have to get that sticker that says "My other car is a Silvia" ROFL. Anyway, just was curious if anyone had any recommendations for a reliable comfortable daily driver for less than $5,000. Thanks for your opinions.

anydbody who bashes a honda for no reason is an idiot, those are the people you see a couple of days later posting "does anybody know where i can get a 240sx?"

I intend to get a early 90s civic as a beater as well (or a 3rd gen accord).

Geo metro early 90s (late 80s??) Geo Metro/Prizm,

You will not believe how many of those things I still see driving around today.

Other than that I would suggest a 92(dont know other years) Accord.

go buy an older accord for $3-4K and spend a little cash on some maintenance, and the car will literally go forever. just maintain it. and dont modify the exterior in any way.

SRJ. Lotsa interesting choices for daily drivers:

another 240sx (S-13), but stock. Of course I happen to have one for sale (snicker). But seriously I've been using mine fora lengthy commute for years, it's been great and reliable.1st generation miata (great gas mileage, reliable and fun but you need to be under 6' tall)Totyota Corrolla - if you're looking for a reliable commuter and not concerned about looks, this is it. This is what I used as a commuter before my 240sx. Can't knock toyota quality.Honda civic: I'm not sure why you have such a honda phobia but they are honestly good/reliable cars. Nissan Sentra - nice reliable car. Plus you keep your fleet within 'da family.Acura Inegra was mentioned. Also very nice and fun to drive.

I can think of tons more, but I figured you're looking for small. Good luck

thanks for all the opinions guys. I have thought of every car you had mentioned that are known for reliability. What year 240sx do you have for sale and how many miles are on it?

i would say go with an older (9o) 24osx for about 25oo or so, sure they have high miles, but u already know a lot about maintenince and expected problems wiht high mileage 24os, or u could try an older se-r, if u go with a 94ish, u'll have another sr2o!, or if not, u can still get a nice g16de

and as far as bashing on honda, theres no reason, sure a lot of people think they're hondas look good when really all they did was damage, but that doesnt mean they're bad cars, just people with COMPLETELY different tastes (of lack thereof), so a civic wouldnt really make a bad daily driver, as long as u keep it clean

A red '89 hatchback 5 spd with 189K miles. I'm the original owner. Still looks good for her age and runs great. I have a listing with pics in the Buy/Sell/Tade section if your interested. I can personally vouch that S-13's are ideal commuting cars. Fun, reliable, cheap to buy, maintain and insure, and look good. Heck I still enjoy commuting in mine.

Good luck with your search.

I bought a 1991 integra gs. It had 183xxx miles on it, but it still runs great. Its a hatch back, which also makes it a great parts car. Fold down the back seat and you would be amazed what you could fit in there. Its starting to get some rust on it, so i will have a project infront of me trying to make that look better. I have put about 12000 miles on it since owning it, and i had an axle break, a lower ball joint, and a had to replace a alternator. All done for under 250 dollars, and it runs strong now.

I would strongly considering selling it to buy an s13, because that would be so phat owning an s13, and an s14, but the car runs so good, and i would be afraid of buying more problems.

Good luck with what ever you decide, but if you get a civic, usdm motors are plentiful, even at junk yards. My friend had a 91 crx si, and we found another d16 for 200 bucks with a trans, and car runs great after a simple motor swap.

Daily driver... 4 door and automatic. For $5000, you should easily be able to find a car with around 80-100k miles, that will last you for a couple of years. Besides Honda's, Toyota Camry's are also known to go for long periods of times. BMWs are good too, but they're around the 6-9k for well maintained, ~150k miles.

If you aren't worried about gas milage, Take a look at the older maximas too. 3rd gen are cheap and plentiful. They also give you a little more room.
