started the car tonight, and heard clackity, clackity sound from bottom of the emgine compartment, like something was loose.

surprised, turned off the engine and re-started and absolutely no sound whatsoever.

what do you think this is ?

Do you think it's HLA (aka lifter) noise? Did you hear more of a rythmic tapping sound that varies with engine speed or a rattle?

Is it only when the engine is cranking?

Also, some cheaper oils will let the engine rattle for about a second until the oil pressure gets up. I tried a so called "Good" oil had to get rid of it & put back in the Valvolibe Durablend, which works very nicely.

A few things rely on oil pressure to work properly, including bearings, guide tensioners, and lifters. Something could have been dry and the first start lubed it up. On the second start, it still had oil in/on it. How long had the car been sitting?

Sounds like it's in the starter area, but really need to hear it to be sure.

Tried recording before & all you hear is all the surrounding noise as well & you can't really hear the correct sound.

You could give it a try, just for the fun of it & maybe it'll work with this sound.

Yes, if the starter is going, it can still start the engine.
