I was curious as to to what the exact difference between a Frontier and hardbody transmission is

I'm currently in the process of converting my Frontier from automatic 2wd to 5speed 4x4 I've found plenty of sources for the ALL the 4x4 conversion parts including the transfer case from an automatic from $300 shipped -$500 local but I cannot seem to find a 5 speed for under $700 shipped out of a D22

I know the Frontiers and Hardbody Platforms are very similar and I can pick up a 4wd 5speed transfercase and all only $200 all day long without super high milliege + I've never really heard of anyone that had a bad transmission.

I have thought about cutting the output shaft with a portaband (it has been done and works + I refuse to put an automatic transmission in once its been removed)

I don't care about gear ratios or anything just as long as I can wire up my speedo which tends to be a universal amongst Nissans and it will bolt on and use stock drive shafts I'm good to go. I really don't care to use a older flywheel or starter assuming those are different as long as they bolt on.

I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this and I'd almost bet people have been doing this already I just don't have the deep pockets for trial and error

God luck citing that shaft with a porta-ban, it's hardened. Use a grinder with a cut off wheel.

Thats good to hear I really do believe they are the same thing. I don't seem to have alot of play time lately though so I may just cut the shaft. as for doing it with a zip disc I don't know if I want to heat up the metal like that but it maybe easier to get a strait cut too.

I guess if i just don't try to push it through all at once a Grinder will be the best best. Besides I doubt I'll keep the auto another year by then I hope its diesel.

as for now its just nice to have 4wd for winter
