93 Infinity J30 170,000 miles. Just bought it, running great, but then gradually started running a little rough, mainly noticible at idle only. Then one day it was so bad that when I started it it would run, but not move. Took to mechanic (term is loosely used here) and he replaced fuel filter, (filthy), then fuel pump and relay. Nothing. Informs me he knows nothing else & take it to someone else. $300 down the drain, and I still can't drive this thing I just bought. CAN'T CAN'T CAN't afford dealership, damsel in distress both financial and other and must avoid being ripped further. Engine turns over strong but doesn't fire (timing?) and no fuel is being distributed. (Bad NEW fuel pump?) One thing probably unrelated: dash lights shot fuse a couple weeks prior, then again after I replaced it. And could it be some sort of dealership resetting procedure or kill switch thing? Please any suggestions, preferrably cheapest ones first. Thanks, guys. Don't know what we (or at least me) women would do without ya -don't care what we usually say.

You mean with the vehicle in Drive you can rev the engine (rough) and the car will just sit there?Rough engine could be quite a few things...but very likely not timing if it was running fine before. How many miles since you bought it?

It could be a bad pump, especially if they used a non-factory part last time. Checking the fuel pressure is fairly easy. A lot of diagnosis procedures are fairly easy, just that most shops have to stick to their minimum charges just to pop the hood.

I'd bring it to AutoZone and have them check for engine codes. It's free.

The fact that it gradually degraded sounds like it could be the Mass Air Flow Meter. I've had a MAF start to go and exhibit the same symptoms as a bad fuel pump.

Let us know if you find a fix.

Autozone only checks for OBDII. 93 J30 has OBDI which is useless to autozone

Lisa, welcome to the board.

Do want to comment that you probably didn't get ripped at all by the replacement of the fuel pump and filter as it probably needed it from your description of the filter. If it was visibly filthy, I would fear for your injectors.

Unfortunately, cars, especially ones that have been driven, require service to be maintained in as new condition. And as in lunch, there is no free service.

Thus your options are two fold. Read the previous posts here and see what you can expect in procedures and expenses to return your car to a reliable condition. Or, evaluate your budget and determine an alternate transportation strategy. There is no free ride.

Good luck!
