I have been in away at school for the past 3 months and freshman cant have cars so i have been out of the loop for a while. But im coming home and finishing up my car in the next week and i have a quick question.

I blew the 2nd cylinder because of overheating, coolant issues and the engines all in peices in the garage. all i need to do is replace that one piston but on the cylinder wall is a very minor scratch you can only feel with your finger nail. My freind said he could hone it out a little but my question how big of a deal is a very minor scratch. im saying if you rub your hand around the wall you couldnt feel it. its only when you scratch with your finger nail is when you notice it.

thanksnick

if you can feel a scratch with your finger nail then thats WAY too deep.

Your friend is right that you can use cylinder honing tools (stones or dingleberries) to hone out the cylinder wall but then you are now talking about staying with in the +- of the bore spec.

If your friend is going to hone the cyl walls, make sure you get a bore gauge so that he doesnt take off too much. If the scratch is too deep then you might have to enlarge the bore and get oversized piston rings.
