First of all i pulled my red top sr20det, to put in a new h/g, new transmission, clutch, clean and paint the engine bay.I have never done anything like this before. nore do i have any help or advice. Now i live in Iowa, so i cant drive the car in winter, great time to work on it. My garage isnt heated but i have a nice propane heater. Hot+cold=condensation...(my problem i assume)I pull it all out, pull the head off, let the motor sit.Started working on my engine bay. After about a month i wanted to start cleaning my block, and notice surface rust in the two center cylinder walls, its not all over just in certain spots, i know this cant be good.I didnt plan on pulling the rotating assembly, cause im scared ill mess something up during reassembly. Is there a safe way to stop this and or fix it besides pulling everything and honing it?its worse on my camshaft lobes.i can take pictures if needed!please help!thanks in advanced

Rust on the cams is crazy you will have to replace those for sure. But as far a cylinder walls a good hone should be fine. Or you could try to just clean with a non abrasive cleaner. Just use a rag and good cleaner and it should come off. But if you got rusty parts on the head thats different. But surface rust on the cyclinder walls is nothing on a aluminum block.

The SR is a Aluminum block so rust should not be a issue. Maybe some surface rust but thats it. Clean it and it should be fine.

Acutually i just soaked the cams in wd40 for awhile then took fine steel wool and they cleaned up great. As for the cylinder walls im not sure yet.I poured in some fresh oil to coat them for now..

So a little bit of surface rust wont hurt when i go to fire it up this spring?it wont mess with the ring seal or anything?

thanks!

The block may be aluminum but it is still steel sleeved.

As for the rust. Might want to check to see if there is a leak in the ceiling dripping on your parts. the heater warming up the room wouldn't cause the parts to have condensation on them unless the heater was turning the room from -20 to 90 degrees in seconds. Either way clean the surface rust off and make sure it didn't pit into the cylinder walls.

no leaks in the ceiling, my heater forsure causes condensation, its pretty much -20 to 90 in a matter of minutes.i poured some oil in the cylinders to stop it for now, how would you suggest cleaning it?pull everything out and just hone it? or just use some steel wool and risk some debris getting trapped.thanks sil80315

had the same issue with a ka a while back. i ended up soaking the cylinder walls in fogging oil, and letting it sit for a day. in my case, it rust wasn't all that bad, so i soaked a large piece of scotch brite in oil and lightly worked the cylinder walls. i didn't think it would work, but she still runs nicely.

well since the motor is taken apart now you will need to hone the cylinders so alittle surface rust if not to serious wont be a problem. I would try moving the heater so it slowly warms up the garage . If you want. Try getting a can of WD 40 and giving all your metals a coat of spray
