Cylinder Head Rattle

A friend of mine has an s13, KA24E, and I guess there is some rattling coming out of the back of his cylinder head (read: closest to firewall). It starts rattling ~2000 and continues rattling to ~3500, and thats it. It also spew smoke and he said the exhaust smells like something is burning. He said that there is no loss of power anywhere on the rev range, so it's not the timing chain problem (at least not directly) which is how my KAE bit the dust. It's also an automatic if that makes a difference.

could be an oil pressure problem. could be too low and the vavlves tap. But i dont know b/c it doesnt make that noise when its idleing.
