is it possible to have an ignitor with one bad cylinder?

Anyone know how to test a rb20 ignitor?

last question.... do any other engines have ignitors that are interchangable?

Thanks,sam

Before buying anything, check and make sure that you have continuity between the ECU and igniter and the ignitor and coil. If you swapped coils, then you know it gotta be something like that....

Check the output signal from the igniter and see if all 6 put out at least 9.5 volts....I think that is what they are supposed to put out.

Why does EVERYONE like to buy new parts instead of thinking that something they did might have failed....I cant TELL you all the problems I have had that turned out to be not a part issue, but a faulty connection/unplugged sensor/stupid mistake. if I bought parts for each time I had one of those issues I wouldnt have ANY money to eat with.

Heh... for work I had to take Kepner-Tregoe training, which basically teaches you how to troubleshoot. The main thing they teach you is to go back and see what changed before the thing broke... i.e., what did YOU change?

I checked all the wires..all ok

I guess i can check the ignitor pins off the ecu first, then the ignitor to eliminate those possibilities. is the voltage off the ecu supposed to be 9.5v? thats a little high for an ecu isnt it?

Thanks jon

That is the voltage the igniter sends to the coils....

The ECU doesnt GIVE voltage to anything, it provides ground for things that already have voltage.

I assembled everything and was getting ready to test the ignitor.....i started the car, got ready to back probe the ignitor... burned my hand on it, then the car sputtered and died. Now it wont start at all. I guess the ignitor finally just gave out entirely.

If the igniter burnt your hand, I would say its toast.....it shouldnt get hot like that UNLESS it has a bad ground or something else is shorted.

I just bought a rb26 ignitor off ebay, it looks identical to mine. $59 with a cas included. I hope it works.
