I'm pretty retarded when it comes to all this CVT stuff.

I test drove my friends Versa today and when I floored it, the engine just kept revving up to like 6 and never shifted gears. Is that normal?

Yes.

Where a normal transmission would have sets of intermeshing gears, the CVT in the Versa has a set of what are effectively variable-diameter pulleys that are connected by a belt. Instead of physically shifting gears like a manual or traditional automatic, the CVT simply varies the belt diameter at each end (the same way gears are controlled on a bicycle--except the CVT has a near-infinite number of ratios). That way, it can constantly vary the drive ratio and keep the engine at a particular sweet-spot (whether it be for fuel economy, noise, torque, or whatever).
