No you don't. If you forget to shift, the gear will be shifted for you as well, so it behaves like a 6 speed automatic.

CVT is not manual. You just shift-up while driving normally and can down-shift as well. For the lazy (and inexperienced) driver, the car down-shifts on its own.

i disagree slightly, the auto down shift is not needed when driving a stick you have a clutch to essentially stop the car for you while you shift, in the CVT when you down shift the car gets a higher rev and can pick up speed so i would say the auto down shift is not laziness or inexperience it's more a necessity :-).

Do you mean you can drive it around in manual-shift mode without shifting, and it will shift like a normal geared automatic? or will it rev up high before it shifts? Because I've driven CVT ATV's before, and I don't like how they seem to stay revved up all the time, so I'd like that feature I think.

I've been driving a 5 speed manual for 6 years... I test drove the CVT coupe and did not like the manual mode... it was NOWHERE NEAR the feeling of driving a true stick shift. I can't wait for my 6 speed coupe to arrive!

That's a pretty obvious statement. No 6spd auto can compare with a 'true' manual. That's why they call it manual. However, to each his own. Some simply prefer the convenience of an automatic transmission.

That's my understanding. It's programmed to not let you damage the engine so if you don't shift when you are suppossed to it will shift for you. It's really designed to give you a 6 speed automatic feel or manual feel if you do the shifting. I have been using mostly CVT mode as I do a lot of city driving and it's just more convenient and responsive.

from what i have seen when in manual mode the CVT will auto shift when you redline, but drive will shift when an automatic normally would, and i agree the CVT is no where near driving a manual but i must admit it is slightly quicker and not needing to shift in traffic is amazing
