Hi everyone,

I just bought a 2011 Coupe 2.5 CVT about 6 months ago, has about 6000 miles on it now. Love this car! Drives great, good gas mileage and looks awesome.
I've noticed one odd problem with it though, and I'm wondering if others have experienced the same issue.
It doesn't do it all the time, but often when driving in manual mode if I have to come to a quick stop (or emergency stop), the car does not seem to want to take off again. I can put the accelerator to the floor and it will just limp along for about a 1/4 mile before it starts to pick up again. Basically it feels like it is stuck in a higher gear. Before anyone states the obvious... after coming to a stop, I did put the transmission back to "1". I've even tried putting it to "D" and it does the same thing.
Has anyone experienced this? I will be calling the dealer to see what they say, but just wanted to get some ideas before calling them.
Thanks.

I think several people have this issue. It's happened to me in cvt and I was able to drive my car home in manual but cvt wouldn't work.

damn... this sounds all to similar to the infamous CVT issue on the early model Muranos. my wife owned an 03, and a little over 100k it started doing the exact same thing being mentioned here. there were tons of other stories with the exact same problem yet nissan refused to do a recall on the transmission and tons of people ended up having to replace their trannys at ridiculous prices. dont take this problem lightly, after reading this im def considering trading my 2.5 s when my lease is up. damn CVTs suck...

My 2012 doesn't do that. But I've noticed something else, when the trans is still cold or getting warmed up, and I take off from a stop for the first time, I.E. leave my driveway or a parking lot, it makes a pop noise. Only does it once but does it everytime. But if the trans is hot, and I park and come back out from a store or something, and start up and drive off it doesn't do it. So it's only the first time taking off when cold, not sure if it's supposed to do that or not, but it's under warranty so if it breaks, they better fix it.

Even though this has nothing to do with the original question, but omg i have that same pop noise on my 2010 altima ! I thought it was only me before i read your post...did you figure out what was the problem? or is it just temperature issue?

The ABS self check makes a clunk noise shortly after start-up. I can't hear it anymore over my exhaust, however.

That must be the noise I hear. I can't hear it much over the exhaust anymore though....

Must be a 2.5 issue, I have about 3500 on my 2012 SR and work great no matter how hard I ride her... Manual, D(s), and D. I would report it ASAP to your dealership... Make the tech reproduce it with you there.

GreenQ45a, I have the same car as you, mine makes the noise, but it's not that bad like it's going to blow up or something, plus if it does I'll get a new transmission. But my girlfriends parents car is a 2008 2.5 CVT and theirs does it too. When you are driving your car for the first time during the day, be sure to turn the radio off and when you are moving forward listen closely you will hear a little pop it's not loud so listen close.

I do hear the Pop from the ABS, however, I was referring to the part here:

Yours does that ^ ?

Isn't this just limp mode? The ecu is trying to protect the Cvt or engine from damage. This exact scenario happens to me once in a while. I think it's a huge problem and could definitely cause an accident.

The op is referring to a different issue. I am completely familiar with both of these issues and one is extremely dramatic in comparison to the other. The cvt surge is a very subtle surge in power when traveling around 20-30 mph and giving it a small amount of gas. The op is describing the car literally losing power almost completely. Even when pressing the pedal to the floor the car does not respond.

yeah, mine doesn't do any of that, just makes a small pop noise when hitting about 20mph for the first time after a cold startup, then it's fine after that the rest of the way. I was told be the dealership that all CVT's do that, and my parents Altima as well as my gf parents Altima all do that, but no loss of power or sudden surge of power either........

Thanks for all the replies..
The issue that I'm experiencing defintely sounds like "limp mode" and not the CVT surge issue. I have no idea why Nissan would do this without at least having some kind of warning light or something... it is extremely dangerous, and I've almost had a couple of accidents because of it. Everytime I've experienced this, it has always been after a hard stop... then if you need accelerate you have no power and are basically a sitting duck on the highway.
I can understand the ECU trying to protect the transmission if you were abusing the car, but that is not the case when I've had this issue.
