I noticed that when I first start driving in the morning, it seems like the CVT has to warm up a little bit before shifts correctly. When I pull out of the driveway and step on the gas the motor races to 3,000 rpm. After a few miles it will shift and go down to 1700 rpm for 50 mph. This is my first CVT, is this normal?

I will ask my wife to watch this and see if her's does it too.

I just wanted to chime in that it might be a 'warm up mode' I know my Nissan (not a Rogue) w/ a 5speed convential automatic locks out the overdrive gear to keep the revs up and get it warmed up faster. Then when it gets up to temp, it will shift up to 5th.

Every car I've had tends to operate at higher revs while warming up if it's cold outside. I never saw anything different in the Rogue's behavior.

EDIT: Just clarifying that I'm seeing what you're seeing and as far as I know, it's normal.

I am okay with the engine reving at a higher rpm vs an idle when it is cold, but I don't think its good for the engine to hit 3,000rpm and not shift when the engine is cold. I use to have a 2003 Nissan Altima 3.5 and that also seem not to shift into high gear for the first few miles. It seems more noticeable on the Rogue.....However I just started driving it. I was wondering if others noticed this and was it normal. Seems fine after a few miles.

I just got a Rogue, and haven't noticed this yet.. But I know all my Honda's would reven in the 2500 range till the car warmed up. 3000rpms doesn't seem that high if it only lasts a few minutes.

What you describe is completely normal. It's mentioned in at least one place in the owner's manual, and my Altima (also CVT) does the same thing. It's nothing to worry about.

I should mention too, thinking of the cold... During the day my car sat out in the 6 degree heat of SE Minnesota yesterday, upon leaving work and shifting from park to D, the CVT made a slight squeel. I'll have to see how it does today after work.
