It's a lot more involved than that.

With the age of your car, I'd recommed replacing the entire axle with a rebuilt unit from Pep Boys/Autozone/local parts store (you can usually get a lifetime warranty).

You'll need to remove the brake caliper(14mm).

Then the axle nut (36mm I believe). You'll probably need an impact wrench and lots of PB Blaster to get that loose. Leave the axle nut on the very end of the axle and hit it with a dead-blow hammer (or use a block of wood and a regular hammer), to loosen the axle from the hub.

Then you'll need to remove the two bolts that hold the front strut to the top of the steering knuckle (17mm and 19mm).

Move the steering knuckle to the side and pull the axle out from the back of the hub.

Pull the axle out of the transmission.

Installation is the opposite. Just be carefull putting the axle back into the transmission. There is a C ring on the end of the axle that can be a pain sometimes. Make sure the axle is seated all the way into the trans before finishing the installation.

I've had a few cocktails tonight, but I'm pretty sure that's most (if not all) the steps you need. I'll go over it again tomorrow to make sure.

the drivers side is cake. the pass side is a SOB.

with air tools and a lift, i did the drivers side real quick, but the pass side was a pain. its difficult to get to the bolts on the center carrier, and removing the bearing from the carrier is a pain.

also, the rebuilt axle came with paint on the outer bearing surface. i should have wirebrushed the paint off, but i just used the bolts to pull the bearing into the carrier in a cross pattern. its gonna suck if i have to replace the pass side again.

im not sure if i would attempt to do the axles without air assistance. alot of cursing will be involved.

I replaced both of my axles at the same time (roughly 2 years ago). True the passenger side is a biatch and a half, but I had more trouble getting the support bracket off than I did on. The one thing I did was smear the hell out of the inner portion of half shaft support with anti-sieze (just in case I had to change that axle again).

Just getting to the half shaft support bracket that mounts to the back of the engine, and then removing it from the old axle to install on the new one.
