I recently noticed that both my cv boots have a rip in them in my 98 pathfinder. Is it something i should replace asap? How much would it cost?

you should replace them soon.water kills the cv joint.you should be able to buy these at a local auto parts by you.thats the easy way to replace, the other way is buy the cv boot but you have to pull the axles apart to replace.https://www.4x4parts.com/catal...=2831

thanks, that seems like a little too big of a job for me to do myself. Any idea how much it would cost to have it done?

I just got one side done 2 weeks ago and I think it was $200. I noticed a small tear last month and just decided to get it fixed, so get it fixed before it stars clicking, because it will cost you double to replace the axle.

Why would it cost double? You're still replacing the same joint whether its clicking or if the boot is just torn.

he's clearly talking about replacing the boot before it starts clicking once it starts clicking, only then does the axle need to be replaced if the boot is torn but no click then all you have to do is replace the boot and repack grease, cakedaddy is right when he says axle replacement is twice the cost of boot replacement ive had around three torn boots on my QX4 but always replaced immediately, 150k adventure-packed miles and still original axles

I talked to a mechanic and he said there's more labor involved in replacing just the boot than it is for the whole axle. He suggested i waited until i heard it click. He said 30% of cars that come in his shop for oil changes have ripped boots and he suggests the same thing to everyone. He said i might as well wait and get all new axles once they start to click, because axles really aren't that expensive anymore. I'm still undecided on what i wanna do.

get a 2nd opinion. ive always considered it best to save a part(the axle in this case) by keeping it good as opposed to ignoring one problem and letting it create another problem.

Depends on shop rates. Takes about 1 hour more to replace a boot than an axle. If shop rates are upwards of $75 or more, it's cheaper to replace the axle.

Believe me, I know!

This zip thing looks awesome! i had one of the boots done and it cost me a bit over $500. I was under the pathy today and found a grease trail then i noticed the rip. i only need the outer one right? i didn't understand what it meant by the inner one, 2 layers ? or is the outer one the one by the wheel and the inner one is farther in?
Cheers.
