My CV Boots on my QX4 are shot. I know this isn't optimal, but what do yall have to say about this:

OK. So now I've read that if I hear a clicking noise when turning the CV axle is shot. And, this split boot is more of a temporary repair.

I'll keep reading....

Ya, if it clicks she's a goner. Been through several of 'em on my Accord by now. 'Course, like an idiot, I never remember to check my boots on a regular basis.

So is this fix a DIY or carry it somewhere type of thing?

AND more importantly, is it going to just break going down the road or is that knuckhead of a gas station mechanic using scare tactics on my wife?

Nah, you've got some time before you have to deal with it (weeks, not months). But sure, it could be a problem - doubtful. Just have her take it easy on the tight corners.

I'm not a wrench turner, so I dunno how hard it is to DIY.

If the CV joint is toast, there's no rush on the boot.

I think I would lean towards replacing the whole axle vs trying to replace the joint and boots. Especially if you're going to do this yourself. We did this several times on a Honda Civic back in the early 90s. Eventually someone designed a better boot for the aftermarket rebuilt axles.

Ok, I'm going to replace the whole axle. Would you go reman or new? Reman from O'Rielly with lifetime guar is $60.
