CV axle replacement, 97 Maxima, new axles too short?

I just replaced my CV axles and when I shift the car into gear, the transmission does not make contact with the axles. Why? Need help. My first guess is they are too short but I have already exchanged the axles once.

Did this job myself last year - was important to note: there are different replacements for the various 'types' of transaxle/ABS, non-ABS, etc. Sure you got the right ones in there?
