So I'm finally making it back to my 720, now that school is out. I've picked up the pieces from not working on it, and figured out where I go from here. This involves replacing my CV axles. When I stopped, I had the front driver axle off. Now I'm getting ready to replace the new one into it, and I've run into an issue (surprise!!!).

Whatever the metal seal on the end of the shaft that hooks into the t-case is, it's wrong on the new ones. Well, not the same, at least. My old CV axle had an inverted depression, and the new one has a hump. The hump is preventing me from sliding the axle onto the t-case, as there is a bolt there in the way.

My question is - Does anyone think I could remove the new seal, and replace it with the old one? (Making sure it was sealed and clean, of course)
Could I take that bolt out of the t-case? Does anyone know what purpose it serves?

Any advice will greatly be appreciated.

This is where the bolt is that the new CV Axle conflicts with.

The inside part of the old CV Axle seal. You can see that there is a gasket, but I'm thinking I could maybe save it from the new one. You can also clearly see that there are clips that you can take the seal off with.

I can't exactly answer your question, other than to say, that sucks... who the **** made that axle?

I would try to find pictures of other 720 axles online to see if they all are dumb or if there is one that is made like oem.

I haven't messed with my stuff up there yet to date, other than to drop the diff for motor swapping.

You might also ask on ratsun's 720 forum as a couple of those guys own like 3 or more 720's and have taken everything apart and put it back together. I hope to get time one day to fix up mine, but I am also working on a daily mazda pro 5 and just starting piecing together an RB20det swap for one of my S13's. So hopefully one of these days I will start making write-ups like other members on here. (Nico members are awesome when it comes to info sharing)

Well, the axle was terribly hard to find. I made an old topic about them back when I bought them. The axles are nigh impossible to get, except from Nissan, where they were literally 700$ per side. So I ordered from a vague online company in a last-ditch effort. The brand itself, though, is Cardone. The axle is the same, except for that odd hump.

I forgot about ratsun! Thanks for the advice. Just posted there.

Ironically enough, when I google things about the axles, my old thread is one of the top results. Ahhh, the joy of working on vehicles that aren't popular.
