I own a 96 I30, about a month back I had taken the car into a local certified mechanic for a CV axle replacement as I had be driving with a torn outer CV boot. To make a long story short, the new CV axle failed 2000KM later at the transaxle. The mechanic said that the CV axle had slipped out of the transaxle and he was going to order another CV axle from another vendor and have it fixed.

I got a call today letting me know that that due to the CV axle failure it has also caused damage to the spline in the transaxle. He has the manufacturer of the part coming in to investigate.

Does anyone know what would cause this to happen other than poor installation, a wrong part, or defective part? What now needs to happen to the transmission, is it a complete replacement or can it be repaired. If so, at what cost?

The way I see it, the mechanic is on the hook for all damage caused by the failure and he should be fortunate that I don't also call him on a safety related matter and the better part of a week that I have been out of a vehicle.

I would think that the spline, (or possibly differential), could be replaced in the transmission. transmission work is gonna cost though. I hope it's not the place on Mullock that did the work. That's where I was thinking of taking my car for any work that I didn't feel comfortable in doing myself.

Hi ...Thanks for the feedback.

What caused the problem has still not been confirmed so I would not want to slander any particular establishment. What has been confirmed is that it is directly related to the work performed and I had the vehicle serviced to avoid a safety related situation which unfortunately for me and the mechanic happened as a result. I am only expecting the vehicle to be fixed and returned in a timely manner.

If you get your car back in a timely manner, repaired correctly and at no additional cost, I would praise that establishment and recommend them to everyone I know. I hope this is how it turns out. Please keep us informed.
