i was reading through the forum on how to replace a cv axel on 96 i30. after reading threads and from my own past experience (i have replaced more than 10 over the past couple of years on different cars) that this would be a simple break it down pull it out and slap it in.

NOT, after about a day or 2 of battling to get it out i looked for a pic of the axel in question only to discover that it had 3 bolts holding it in to some sort of "stablizing" ring so we managed to get 2 of bolts out but the last one is on the top of the axel with barely any hand room to get leverage to make the break.

any suggestions

Have you tried using swivel ratchets or sockets?

Unbolt the axle stay from the block. It's held on by 3 bolts (10 or 12mm).

its not like i have an option of not doing it.. so i'm heading out to find a tool to remove the last bolt. if i put that one back in i will install it on the reverse side to make it easier or not at all..

some of the strangest car engineering i have ever seen but its my car

update,

i went to sears after searching the other stores for an angled tool to remove the bolt. its done now something else to deal with it will not slide out!

I've been hammering, chizzling and pulling. its not budging best guess is that its seized or just rusted in from my observation it looks as if this is the first time this has been done on this car. I should have taken it to the shop

well i have called in a mobile mechanic to assist for a nominal fee

The best thing to do is remove this bracket altogether. Many people have problems with removing the passenger side CV axle because of this bracket, and several have even reported difficulty after supposedly disconnecting the CV axle from it. IIRC there are two bolts holding it onto the transmission so if you remove those, the CV axle and the bracket should come out together.

interesting enough we ( myself and the moblie mechanic) had to remove this bracket and beat the rest of the cv out of out it. once that was done i wire brushed the bracket to removal all the old material left over. greased it, remounted it and overgreased all the parts that needed it and had the whole thing put back together within 15 minutes i'll think on doing the starter.. or just send it to the shop
