Does this sort of thing apply across to other shops as well? Tyre shops as an example? I work in one in NZ, and our service prices are higher, along with some of our tyre prices, but we are constantly having people come back and buying from us again due to us offering one of the best customer services of any other local shop. Or is the tyre market completely different over there?

Now kids are being told to hang around and let the tide drown them in the sand because they're powerless to get what they want. I guess that's what an economic downturn will do to modern attitudes.
Well, it's still true to a point, it's just that there are so many people in it now that the waves have to be really damn big to get noticed; the ocean isn't as calm as it used to be. Maybe this metaphor has run it's course? :gotme

Yeah, although it usually takes a long time to build that sort of reputation. If not, the higher price has to be justified by some sort of other service (pickup/dropoff, free drinks, killer waiting room, etc).

I think it's a situational thing. I try to support local businesses, so there are times when it's more pricey but I know the money is going to a good place and the people are good to you. Also, if it's a matter of time, I usually go with whatever is quicker.

Hear hear. I completely agree with Jesda. I think that's a huge part of what's wrong with a LOT of things these days. Everyone else is waiting for someone else to take initiative. I'm not waiting for s***. I'm going to take the damn initiative. But then what drives me nuts is that everyone acts hurt when soemone does what they were waiting for them to do! I'm impatient now, because I let you wait for me to do what you were to indecisive to do!

Just remembered something.
There are a few places I buy beer from on the way home on Friday evening. Of the two I frequent, one of them is a bigger store, but pretty cheap (about a buck less for a 6 pack than the others) and has a very good selection. The other is a family place where they know my face, but have a poor selection. However, the family place gives me a pint glass when I buy a sixer of Sam Adams and will chat briefly with me before I leave. Its pretty 50/50 where I go, but if I want something as common as Harpoon IPA, the bigger store is the only choice since the family store somehow has no idea that the Harpoon brand exists, even though its nationwide and brewed in their backyard.

Have you ever asked them to stock it? In my experience shops like that usually will give it a shot if a regular customer like yourself asks for it.

Once the battlecry of people who wanted to DO something rather than just letting stuff happen, modern mentality has taught people to react to such a statement as some kind of offensive threat.

I meant it as a threat. If other people want to suck, fine; don't wait for me to care or self-actualize sympathy.

Complaining about not getting good service at walmart is funny.

And this mentality is why Walmart thinks it's okay to do.

If I'm spending money, I should be treated well. That's how business works.
