to whisk heat out of the engine. A properly vented hood will you to cool much more efficiently.

a lot of those cobra ones don't even have a vent on them though, they'll be covered most of the time.

engine makes heat...heat rises...heat rises out of a vented hood...heat cant rise out of a solid hood.

oh dear everytime you drive in the rain water gets the underneath of your car wet...and on the engine...

plus vented hood DONT just have huge circular cut out holes in them or something...

they are vents like this (imagine this as a hood):

__ ____. / /

its hard to show in this lame drawing but the vents are such that its harder for rain to fall straight down into them on a moving car.

The amount of water that would get into the engine compartment with a vented hood would do NOTHING. It would evaporate the moment it hit the engine. I takes a LOT of water in the ignition or intake to drown out a motor... in even the heaviest rain storm you would never hurt it... vented hoods are good.. a lot of the one's you see on Mustangs and the first Subaru Outbacks are absolutely NON-FUNCTIONAL!!! There is not even a hole in the hood.. just asthetics.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but how about if your car is parked? I'm sure the rain would drown your engine, am I right?

True as Swift said...if your that worried don't get it.....my friend has a hachi with a vented hood which took engine compartment temps down a whooping 40degrees under hard driving conditions.the vent as shown in the installs page works like a venturi....hard to explain.....kind of like a syphon. the air passing over the hood draws air inside the engine compartment out....and also heat rises and it provides a easy escape route....cooler engine temps are good. also the vent would not be over your air filter and if where you live it rains so badly that your worried about getting flooded........well get that spiffy euro hood.

I think its more an aesthetic issue than function. Your 240 already has a lot of areas to vent heat. If it didn't, we'd all overheat. The only time my 240 comes close to overheating is on the race track. I cure it by opening the hood when I'm done (and parked) My opinion Vented hoods look ricey on 240's, just like giant oversized wings. They detract from a very clean design. But you should do what makes you feel good, If that means a vented hood, then go for it /

What?? Under normal driving conditions and in stock form, most cars are fine the way they are. But add a few mods, maybe a SR20 or even a turbo to that KA and you get alot of heat under there. I don't think vented hoods look ricey at all, if its properly and nicely done. Oh, i'm gonna draw pictures too!!! How it looks depends on the car it's on. On a $100,000 Audi Sport Quattro or $120,000 Saleen S7 which were built with them- not ricey. On a 12 year old 240sx or a Honda Civic it looks ricey. Sorry.

I still think it depends on how its done, someone had a picture of a S13 with a vented hood, and hood mounted gauges (that someone remarked looked like a periscope). It looked very clean and well done especially since the hood vent was from an older Nissan hood.

I have to disagree with you too, why does a hood vent look good on a big engine sports car that costs $75k+ and not good on a small engine sports car that cost $27k MSRP??

i have a pretty strict view of rice not rice.. and those home-made vented hoods or adding vents to yer hood look crappy... but god i love that c-west hood.. and for only $850!!

I didn't say I liked the louvered hoods on the Sport Quattro or Saleen S7, I said they're not ricey. Both of those cars are essentially slightly detuned race cars, and were built that way. Here's another example. Window louvers on a 1970 Moosestang Boss 302 is not rice, but Window louvers on an old 240sx screams rice and mullet. If you like vented hoods, then buy one. It's your opinion that matters most, but that opinion may not be shared by everyone.

I must agree... Cars with loads of power that would overheat even in relatively normal driving conditions :rolleyes need them, but unless you race or you have a very hot engine, it just looks ricey, like big wings and body kits.

There's plenty of 240s with high powered engines under their hoods?? You aren't judging by engines tho, you are saying that if you saw a 240, and didn't know it had a 600hp SR20DET under its hood, you'd call it rice for having a hood vent?

Tempers seem to be a little flair-y here. Bubba and Name clearly lean toward a more stock look.. and not many people in the world dont like the look of a $75k sports car.

I dont think anyone here would disagree that a 600hp SR would need extra cooling, the average SR needs extra cooling..

Question is look vs. functionality, we all agree giant book-shelf wings are useless, just like fake vents, or a vented hood on a stock SOHC with 170k miles -- All Rice. But if you do have an SR, esp a tuned one, a vented hood isnt trying to make you car more than it is...

Basically stock cars can overheat, depending how you drive, what mods you have (or parts you are lacking). Drift cars are especially prone to overheating, as the radiator rarely/never gets air. In these situations (as already stated) a vent would be nice. Most vents do however look like garbage.

I have one Options video where some girl just sawed out her own vent and bent it downward, it looked so phat, just cause it was homemade. They were laughing at it and everything. Another girl in the same crew rode with no back windshield and it was completely gutted except for one race seat and the top half of the dash, amazing. Oh these were AE86s.
