I have had W7's in ported enclosures in the past, and in these instances, i would have to agree that they can be sloppy, but it sounds extremely clean and responsive in this setup. As far as the JL components go, I am happy with them, they aren't necessarily my first choice, but I was able to work a good deal with the dealer on them.
putting 12" W7's in a sealed box is just NOT a good idea... the W7 was designed for "boomy" bass. As such, for ideal performance, it needs a lof of air to breath due to the excursion of the woofer. Running this sub @ 1000 watts in a sealed box may cause it to bottom out at high volumes, and eventually damage the sub over time.
By putting the W7 in a sealed box, you are in essence trying to get good SQ out of it, but this sub was desgigned for SPL, not SQ. In my semi-professional opinion, if you wanted a sound wuality setup, a 13" W6 would have been a much better option... and the power handling on the 13" W6 is the same as that of the 12" W7, however, the W6 operatesd much more easily in a sealed box.
If you guys had called JL Audio, I'm sure they would have said the same thing... again, if you like the setup, that's cool, but just know that you are trying to get the W7 to do something it wasn't designed to do, and in addition, you're giving it more RMS power than it wants also... just be careful when you're blasting your setup, that's all I'm saying!
