They build a router table with a bad boy router and cut them out with a template.

Draw a circle on a piece of MDF, and cut it out using a tool of your liking

As PMQ said, cut out the hole for the sub using the template that should be supplied via the sub. On another board, use the OD of the sub to cut out another hole. This attaches to the first board to flush-in the sub.

Router is preferred in order to get a perfectly round cut. If you have a router, you can go to Home Depot/Lowes style places to get an attachment to cut the holes.

I use a kigsaw. If you use the proper wood cutting blade you can cut a close to perfect saw pretty quickly.

Yeah, but most people use whatever POS blade they have hanging around

If you have a router, might as well use it. OR, this is a good reason to add to your tool listing

Also a Roto-Zip works great. Plus most of them come with a circle guide attachment that you can accurately measure the diameter of your cut. They do make a Craftsman circle guide for plunge routers though.

Or you can buy them in bulk from Select Products. They use their router and bits, so yours don't get dull cutting through .75-1.0'' of MDF. Plus this can be very hard on the motor, depending how good the router is. Even the 3/4HP models we use only last 2-3years tops. Select also sells plexi rings and other items like aluminum mesh.

The device that you attach to a router to cut a circle is sometimes called a "perfect circle" the type of bit you need is a "plunge bit". The bit doesn't have a berring on it like most other router bits. The shank is usually much narrower than the end the router attaches to. Max dia. of the cutting part is like 3/8 or less(unless you have a 1/4" router), with two opposing blades, like 1-1.5" long, with total length of less than 3".
