I thought I’d push ahead just a wee bit with my on board in car computer project lol. I’ve found others have done this with varying degrees of success and some look very, very nice! I’m hoping to learn from them and create something that fits, is flush and is fully operational. So far the hardware spec is looking like:
7” LCD Touch Screen – anti-glare coating will be appliedNano ITX Motherboard with C7 1.0Ghz CPU (about 5”x5”)1GB RAM -2GBRAM depends on chipset160GB HDDCD/DVD BurnerBluetooth onboardOBD II data out Bluetooth enabledGPS – external antennaWiFi 802.11g enhanced/external antennaUSB 2.0 portsInternal audio amplifierMicro ITX DC-DC PSU 250w auto off with battery, surge protection/overvoltage..etc
So far I’ve sourced plentiful supplies of the above if I had more room inside the dash and better ventilation we could move upscale to micro ITX and get a dual core cpu in there but the above will do fine! I’m on track to stick very close to my $1,000 limit on parts. The software side I think I should be able to handle myself with some assistance. OBD II will output nicely and display everything I’m hoping for and more with the correct software in place. I’m going to use Bluetooth to transmit data back from the OBDII I’ll have less wires to run! DC-DC PSU is excellent and will generate little heat and put some protection against the PC and the spikes in power when starting/stopping the engine.
I’m excited about this project and how it’ll look in the end! I should be able to package all components into a generic double din enclosure and fit right where the current CD player is sitting. If anyone out there has done anything like this feel free to get in contact I’d like to share ideas/thoughts..etc
I haven’t yet pulled my CD player yet I will have to, to measure the space in there and get the right case. If anyone else has pulled theirs to install an aftermarket CD/DVD/Nav system could you tell me how much space is back there or the measurements of the stock CD player.
