custom exhaust

finally got exhaust on my car today... not the set-up i wanted but it sounds OK. doesn't sound bad but i think i should have got the set-up i originally wanted. the set-up i first wanted would have been too loud and didnt want to get in trouble because i cut off my 3rd cat (which makes it illegal in california). the 3rd cat has no sensors or anything so no check engine light or anything. my friend's like the way it sounds.... sounds nice but not the V8-ish sound i really wanted. ill try and get vids up soon. i can have vids up by monday but ill see if i can have them up sooner.

So what did you get as a "custom exhaust"? Brand, pictures, more info on it would be good.

i replaced the 3rd cat with pipe 3" in diameter up to the "flang" where i already had 2.5". then at the end i cut off the stock muffler and replaced it with a magnaflow muffler thats the same type of design but smaller and then had the 2 little pipes that come out 2.5" diameter and didn't put tips on it. the guy painted the end of the pipe black to give it a nice clean look at the end and not restrict it at the end... i might get some magnaflow tips like the ones my friend has on his SRT-4 in the future but for now i like it black.

lol ya i'm thinking about it for the future. the guy claims it should be just as fast (13.9) because i didn't have any back pressure before so i would take off slow. i guess the exhaust is waaaaaaay more free flowing then stock BUT i do have something which allows back pressure so ill get the best of both worlds. that would be cool if i could hit a 13.9 without unbolting anything lol but if that doesn't happen, i can still un-bolt it BUT i don't even have a 3rd cat now so it'll be even faster, 13.8 for sure and MAYBE if i get super lucky, maybe a 13.7 even but i'm not sure about the 13.7.

after driving it more, i actually really like it lol i had my friend drive it and go past me at 3000 to 4000 RPM and it was a very noticable difference but nothing i'd get in trouble for unless the cop was a a*s hole (my brother's C5 with all his cats is still louder). it has a nice sound too. sort of a mix between something like Greddy and a V8-ish sound.

no i can't make it, sorry. my dad is acting weird...

it cost me $100 for the 2.5" cat-back from another shop and then yesterday at this shop i spent $280 (he wanted $300) to cut off the cat and fabricate a 3" pipe to replace it and hook-up to the 2.5" i already had and to put another muffler on and everything. ill see if i can get some vids up today but if not then monday for sure

at the end of it the pipe is 3" diameter but before the cat the pipe is HELLA SMALL!!! replaced this part with a pipe 3" in diameter. ill get pics up of the muffler in a little bit... walked outside in my dad was in the front yard (he doesn't know i got exhaust) so i just got to wait till he gets busy with something lol

Looks good! Maybe when you do get tips you can paint them black, I think that would look nice on your Dark Slate A/C.

Great job with the exhaust. A little too much on the raspy side for my tastes, but great none the less! I've been torn between going with the nismo exhaust, or fabbing up a 350z muffler. Anyone got any thoughts?

ya thats how i feel. i wanted a different set-up but got this instead and sometimes i think i should have got the other set-up.... but this one is starting to grow on me lol i only got 1 thing left to do with my exhaust, put electronic exhaust cut-outs before the other 2 cats for the track lol

if i were you i'd go with the Nismo exhaust.....

What's your plan when it comes to the annual emissions check in Cali? Sounds like you're not running a cat anymore if your mechanic friend sawed off the OEM unit.

it's not annually lol new cars don't have to get smog checked for 5 years. i have my stock cat sitting under my bed and it'll be like $50 or less to get it put back on 5 years down the road lol

how are you going to get your car to pass smog without a carb # on that intake (carb # was pending las time i checked)?

Wow, for once Texas has Cali beat on the regulations side of things, depending on your County of Residence the emissions check varies here.

In the big counties we get the wonderful, no frills, all you can get emission check EVERY year. No Pass/No Play. And, yes, I'm in a big county.

As for the Intake, they don't check CARB #'s around here in general. But, if it doesn't pass, I have the OEM parts still. It's just that a straight pipe that required cutting sounded radical vs. an intake. I'll give it a try, if it doesn't work, i'll R&R the intake to pass.

Since you have a 5 year window the $50 to undo the mod isn't a big deal IMHO also.

ya the 5 year window really helps. the guy charged me $75 to cut off the 3rd cat custom fabricate a pipe (went back and forth like 30 times measuring and then bending the pipe) then welding it on. so to just cut that part off and weld the cat back on should be less then $50 even.... sorry for my sarcastic response, i thought you were being sarcastic at first about what am i going to do about smog lol

ya i know, the 1st shop i went to (where i got my 2.5" cat-back) would never do it but this shop, the guy is the one that suggested it lol
