LBC is right, it is very easy to spend a lot of money doing this.
My fiberglass work was the first time I've ever tried, so it is doable. However, it will take some time. And the hardware for my setup (the complete custom trunk and fiberglass stuff) probably cost me around $400-500. That's not including any of the actual speakers/amps. It also took me a few months of working weekends in spare time to put the whole thing together. I probably could have done it all in one week if I had the whole week off, but that wasn't really an option for me.
As far as a budget goes, you can probably plan on getting the following items:
New headunit (maybe $600ish for a good one)New front speakers ($300-600, depending on how nice you want to go: this is also assuming only replacing the fronts)Amp for speakers ($200-300 maybe)Sub (good subs start at probably about $250)Amp for sub (greatly depends on sub, but can run up to $750ish)Wiring and other install gear ($200+)
As you can see, the cost adds up greatly. It can be done for cheaper than this, but to get into the high-end quality, this is probably the cheapest you can go. Good setups can be had for less, but it will take a lot more searching around and potentially being willing to get items from dealers that aren't certified (read: no warranty).
If you're looking to spend in this range, the dealer I've bought most of my gear from is in NJ. It might only be about an hour or so away from you (not entirely sure exactly where either of you are located). But I can definitely put you in contact with him if you get to that point. He is a true mobile audio guru and can certainly let you demo some gear to see what your tastes exactly are.
