my friend has a red top s13 sr20det with pretty much all HKS bolt-ons. Well he has the old clamp on HKS intake filter and recently he made a sorta custom intake using aluminum or som sort of alloy that is used in clothe dryers. The metal tubing is wat i would say flexible. It doesnt bend or anything. Well, he adapted the intake and the tubing to fit and everything and he made the tubing long so it could be cold air coming in and he sayz he feels the difference in hp. Anyone know how to exactly make this custom cold air intake?

If your wondering, y i just dont ask my friend, itz because i wana roll up to him with some extra hp and not let him know. :)

Thankz

I still dont get the purpose of a cold air intake on a turbo car, as soon as the air hits the turbocharger its heated up. If you want colder air get a bigger intercooler.

iono, the idea of colder air entering the turbo would result in the compressed air being at a lower temperature then it would regulary be at. And plus, whats the harm in trying to get some few extra horsepower in a cheap way if its possible.

Go ahead, give it a try, its just every turbo race-preped car I have ever seen in my entire life just uses the shortest piping posible.

true and true, but is their any proof or known attemptz to make cold air on turbo engines and any increase of hp?

I really dont know, but, im sure it has be tested and proven not to work. Every 1400hp skyline I have seen just has short stubs for pipes right on the turbo inlet, they must be doing something right :pface

but i noticed that most of them dont have enough room in the engine bay to install a cold air intake.

i didnt say all cars (i ment some custom turbo set ups), but nm, i quit this argument, :(

also, if using this custom cold air intake setup, do you think their will be a loss of hp or gain or non?

put the shortest , or no pipe/filter on the turbo as possible....if you have a MAP sensor that is..otherwise, as short as possible besides the mafs...and if you are concerned about cooler air, cut a hole in your hood....

what about the hole in the driver side headlight for the s13? I really want to do that. I thought about it one time but didn't know if anyone has done it. lately I saw 2 cars that has it! Headlights still work too!

I didnt think it would matter too much to have a cold air intake on a turbo car? Okay, so maybe you can gain 3-5hp? Who knows.. Who cares, you'd be better off saving the time and money for somthing that will give you real power. Get a better intercooler or water spray if you want the air cooler.

im better off wasting my money and time on somtingelse? the parts that are needed for the install cost well under $20. Tell me wur u gona get that kind of power so cheap, if its possible?only reason im asking iz kuz its fuken cheap and it hopefully increases hp.

when you have extra piping left over from your ic and have nothing to do for 20 minutes on a rainy day w/ a sawzall. it works. oh and also, if you glance at your "rubber" intake after a day of autocrossing, or just when it's plain hot outside..it looks kind of funny right..yeah that's not too good when the air metered going into your turbo is almost pinched due to the surrounding heat causing the rubber to collapse. IMO it serves a purpose.

It is one thing to replace the stock pipe with a alum. one, but going through the hassle of making the turbo pull air from the lower bumber is just crazy to me. I don't care if the air is 30deg or 100deg, in my mind it will exit the turbo at the same temperature.

I guess it's just less heat on the turbo when it is sucked in. What people really want is less restriction for the turbo when air is sucked in. that's why those skylines have short stubs on the inlet. if you want cold air, i would recommend making a pipe that leads to the filter but not attached to it. If anything, I can try to calculate how much of a difference it would be with hot air or cooler air entering the turbo. Im going to have ask my fluids dynamic teacher on that one ;)
