Custom boxes are seen in everybodys trunks these days and I was wondering about how to properly make a box and the things a person needs to do the job right. I don't have the time to read the books at barnes and nobles about custom car audio so im asking here. I wanna know what exactly is needed to make a box, how to do it right and make it flush with the rest of the car. Also I see the fiberglass boxes that make detailed curves and stuff. How exactly does that work?

Go to google, type in WinISD.

This will bring up their main website. Download WinISD pro(free).

It's a program for calculating the airspace required for different drivers at different tuning frequencies. THat's all you need. From that you can design your box, or ask us to, and then just build it

For a noob, it would be far better to read the sub manufacturers specifications and build the box they suggest

there you go.. many tutorials and every box building calculator you could need... i agree about reading the sub manu's specs for the box, so that the tuning and size is for what the subs designed for...

also remember, that the box is the most important part of a sub setup, if your building anything other than a sealed enclosure, make sure 110% that all your measurements are correct for size of enclosure and ports.... otherwise the sub will not sound or hit as good or as hard as it could

Some subs of your choice. An amp that supplies enough power for those subs. Amp wiring kit. MDF. And some knowledge of woodworking. Gloss paint. Fiber glass. And that vinyl crap they cover it with. And that's about it.

As we both know, most sub manufactures don't have SQ in mind when they derive the air volume requirements.

You've probably seen it a bunch of times. Plug the air volume that the manufacture recommends into WinIsd(with T/S parameters of course), and then open a new project using that same driver and create your own air volume and tuning frequency. 9 times out of 10 I've found that I could get a MUCH better(flatter) frequency response then what the manufacture recommended.

I'm not saying you are wrong. I'm saying for a novice, trying to determine what the software program is showing them or knowing how to accurately adjust the box params aint gonna happen. Stick with the factory params +/-10%.

Yeah, I know you weren't saying I was wrong. I was just clarrifying that most of the time a better result can be had if you Properly design your own enclosure

To build a box, you need a good design that is strong and asthetically pleasing. You need at least 1/2 inch (3/4 inch preferred) MDF. You need a way to cut it accurately. I recommend a sabre saw. You need wood glue ( i sometimes use sub-floor adhesive). You need wood screws #10x1.75 *(available at home depot or wherever). You need automotive carpet and some spray adhesive to attach your carpet. A drill is necessary to pre-drill your holes. You will at last need wire to wire it up and wire terminals if you want to be fancy. Thats the basics. There is a science to building boxes and with each box you build you will find ways to make each and every one of them better.

not to thread jack, but i recently came across a pic of an s14 that had a sub mounted inside the car behind the plastic pieces next to where people in the nonexistent backseat are located.................any way for this to be done in an s13? this would be for a 12" mtx sub btw.
