During normal highway cruising at 75 - 80mph on flat roads, I'm experiencing 3400 rpm's. Is that normal for this car? I'm new to the Infiniti brand, but I've driven Saturns, Pontiacs, BMWs, Audis, and Chevys and the Infinitis cruising rpm is about 50% higher than any of those. I'm worried about excessive engine wear and also, could this partially explain 16mpg in mixed driving?

ok,

Here is what I've got. At 75-80mph it was running on 3000 rpm. When it was running on 3400 rpm my speed was at 90-95mph.

You hit the red line at 7500rpm. That's the top rpm for most of the cars. I tried the last 2 tank of gas. I kept reading about people having problem with the fuel consumption. So I tried it. I am in a small city frequently stop and go. I've got 14-15 mpg pure city drive with heavy foot . So I tried to controll my foot next time I've got 17-18mpg( I let her go couple of times) . Try to use the computer it is pretty accurate. It is a good training to see where you loosing it. I new it when I was buying the G I won't get any good mpg. I just wanted to try it what I can get. I drove to Ottawa back and for last weekend. To Ottawa I was doing 80-90mph I've got 22mpg. Back trip I drove as I usually drive. I've got 18mpg( tiptronic and going from 80-120mph night no traffic and Radar detector on). From today I'll go back a way how I drive. I bought the G to enjoy it all the 306 ponies. If I've got 10mpg I would drive a same way too. Also keep it in mind the X is the worst in the G family on the fuel.
