Is there a way to adjust the distance from the vehivle in front?

Yes there is, if you have ICC on your vehicle. See pg 5-30 in the manual

A big Canadian welcome to you, EX35ipcf!

Yes, you can adjust to one of 3 preset distances using the steering wheel button (topmost of the bottom set of buttons on the right side of the wheel), but whenever you turn it on again, it always defaults to the furthest one. I guess that's for safety's sake.
