There have been a couple threads concerning this and I think the general consensus at this point is that if you want cruise control in a Versa you have to buy an SL.

Agreed. Go check the other threads for more detail, but I'm afriad factory cruise is not and will not likely be a dealer-installable option. Also, aftermarket cruise will probably be a while in coming if at all due to the throttle-by-wire setup of the versa, which makes it impossible to use existing aftermarket cruise technology.Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on either point. I went through the same ordeal, and finally got the SL due to the cruise issue.

I'll stick my neck out and say there will NEVER be an aftermarket cruise control for ANY TBW vehicle. However, I'd bet it wouldn't be an impossible adder for the dealer as the switches are the only piece missing. The ECU is already there, throttle position servo - already there. Might require flashing the ECU with a different program, but that could also be there but just dormant because the controls are not hooked up.

Yeah, the ECU is there, but in most cars the ECU doesn't control cruise. That is handled by a separate cruise computer, which I bet the S is missing. Also, probably missing the ASCD switch and associated hydrauling plumbing to handle the clutch-shutoff on the manual model.

We already know that the S auto is only a temporary model, since Nissan can't get enough CVT's to put in both the Versa and Sentra, so it doesn't make sense for Nissan to design the cruise parts for that transmission.

Here's my two cents:

Ben may be right with respect to the MANUAL models, someone would need to compare an S and SL manual side by side to look for plumbing, etc.

The S Auto will not be refittable. Ever. Under any circumstances.

When Nissan's transmission supplier kicks up into high gear and Nissan replaces the S auto with an S CVT, you may see a change in equipment. IF Ben is right, you will probably also see cruise STANDARD on the S.

If Ben is wrong about the plumbing, it will remain the same, or MAYBE nissan will integrate it into their power package.

Any bets anyone?

My bet is they won't get rid of the 4 speed auto, some people don't want a manual or CVT, thank you very much.

I got an S. I would agree with Ben that it's probable that you could add cruise control on the S. The way cars are made these days, they're just lke computers. They're modular. Since cars are more and more using unified platforms, they try not to make too many variations on the internals. Especially when the car is TBW, where there is less specialized mechanical plumbing involved, it makes sense for Nissan to just have hooks ready to add or remove features with. For one, it keeps them from having to stock special parts, keeping inventory costs for them lower. Secondly, that design philosophy keeps them from having to retool eacht time they decide to change the configuration of the model. As like Ever Victorious mentioned, about the possibility that cruise may eventually become standard with the S, it may simply be a replacement of the steering wheel.

The bad news is the cost of upgrading. Considering that air bags are in there, not to mention replacing the entire steering wheel, it would cost more than $500 to have it replaced. At that point, it would be hard to justify the upgrade if fuel savings are the sole criterion. But if $500 is worth it for the convenience, I'd say go for it.
